- The Spring exhibition of works by leningrad artists of 1953 opened in the Leningrad Union of Artists. The participants were , Vsevolod Bazhenov, Leonid Baykov, , , , , , Ekaterina Efimova, Elena Kostenko, Nikolai Kostrov, Anna Kostrova, , , Pen Varlen, , , , , Ivan Savenko, , Elena Skuin, , Victor Teterin, Nikolai Timkov, Mikhail Tkachev, Boris Fogel, Rudolf Frentz, and other important Leningrad artists.[1]
- An artist Victor Oreshnikov is appointed the rector of the Repin Institute of Arts. Headed an institute up to 1979 year.[2]
- October 17 — Second All-Union Exhibition of graduates of the Art Institute of 1953 opened in Moscow. Featured the works of , Nikolai Galakhov, , Valeria Larina, Nikolai Lomakin, , Vladimir Seleznev, and others.[3]
- Exhibition of works by famous Russian artist and teacher Dmitry Kardovsky (1866–1943) opened in Museum of the Academy of Arts in Leningrad.[4]

- July 4 — (Russian: Котов Пётр Иванович), Russian soviet painter, Honored art worker of Russian Federation (born 1889).
- October 6 — Vera Mukhina, (Russian: Мухина Вера Игнатьевна), Russian soviet sculptor, People's Artist of the USSR, Stalin Prize winner, author of monument Worker and Kolkhoz Woman (born 1889).
