2021 Anti-Hindu violence in Rupsha

2021 Rupsha Communal Violence The Muslim Hindu minority was attacked[1][2] by Muslim extremists on 8 August in Shiyali village, Ghatbhog Union, Rupsha Upazila, Khulna District, Bangladesh. Ten temples were attacked and about 57 houses were vandalized and many Hindu shops were vandalized and Hindus were beaten and injured when they tried to resist[3][4]

Initiation of events[]

On Friday (August 8) at around 9 pm, 25-30 men and women devotees were going to Shiyali Mahasmashan from Purbapara temple to chant their names. In the middle of the path was the Shiali old Jame Mosque. Imam of the mosque Hafez Maulana Nazim Uddin, Nazim Samaddar and 7-8 people forbade them to perform kirtan. Then a young man named Masum Mallick forbade them to play drums. Then there is some argument. Extremists insult some Hindus. A meeting was scheduled to be held at the police station on Saturday, August 6. But on Saturday (August 6) at around 6:15 pm, at the instigation of the Imam, about three to four hundred Islamic extremists attacked the Hindus with local ramadas, chapatis and axes.

Attack[]

On August 6, 2021, more than a hundred youths from Sheikhpura, Bamandanga, Chandpur under the leadership of Masum Mallick attacked the Shiali Mahasmashan temple. The idols and cremation materials were vandalized. After that, attacks were carried out on Purbapara, Bamandanga and Chandpur of Shiali village.Attack on Balai Mallick's shop and house, Anirban diamond tea shop, Pritam Majumdar's machineries shop, Ganesh Mallick's drug store, Srivastava Mallick's grocery store, Sourav Mallick's grocery store, Nipul Dhar's house, Narayan, Nitul Barai, Shivpad Dhar's houseContinued vandalism and looting.Because he protested when the Imam tied him up during the kirtan.The idols of Matua Dharmaguru Harichand Tagore, Shantimata and other Hindu deities were vandalized in most of the temples including Shiyali Purbapara Hari Mandir, Shiyali Purbpara Durga Mandir including Govinda Mandir and Samadhi of his house. At the same time, some people were beaten and injured when they tried to resist. Police play the role of silent spectators. When the Hindus tried to resist, the extremists fled.[5][6]

After the attack[]

After the attack, Hindu women are guarding the idols of Shiyali Purbapara Hari Mandir and Shiyali Durga MandirUpazila Nirbahi Officer Rubaiya Tasnim, Assistant Land Commissioner Khan Masum Billah, Rupsha Police Station Acting OC Sardar Mosharraf Hossain, UP Chairman Sadhan Adhikari, Puja Udjapan Parishad Rupsha Upazila President Shaktipad Basu, General Secretary .Krishna Gopal Sen went to the scene of the attack.Additional police were deployed there to control the situation.

Feedback[]

After the incident, Indian Assistant High Commissioner Rajesh Kumar Raina visited the vandalized temples, houses and damaged shops. The aggrieved Hindus described to him the barbaric and inhuman attacks that had befallen them. .They broke down in tears of emotion.[7] He assured them that he would stand by them and hoped that the Bangladesh government would judge them accordingly.

  • Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad condemned the attack. .Council president Milon Kanti Dutt and general secretary Nirmal Kumar Chatterjee demanded punishment for the culprits.[8]
  • Ekattar Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee and Khulna District Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Parishad have condemned the attack and demanded justice.
  • The Women's Council, Udichi and Progressive Forum held a human chain and protest rally in New York City, USA on August 10 to protest the attack.
  • On 10 August 2021, 19 prominent people of Bangladesh strongly protested the attack and demanded exemplary punishment for the perpetrators.
  • The All India Matua Federation has threatened to launch a movement in India to protest the incident. .Subrata Tagore, a member of the group and a BJP MLA from Gaighat, said he would visit the Bangladesh embassy in Kolkata to protest the attack. Union Minister of State for Shipping and Matua leader Shantanu Tagore wrote a letter to the Prime Minister expressing concern over the attack. He urged the Prime Minister to take steps for the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh. He said that this is the biggest protection for the oppressed Hindus in Bangladesh.
