The inter-confederation play-offs of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup qualification will determine the final three qualification spots for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. The play-off tournament will be used as a test event for Australia and New Zealand to host prior to the Women's World Cup. It will take place from 17 to 23 February 2023,[1] and will feature ten teams split into three groups, with the winner of each group qualifying for the Women's World Cup. Australia and New Zealand will also participate in friendlies against the teams in Group 1 and Group 2 of the tournament.
The play-off tournament will be held in Australia and New Zealand as a test event prior to their hosting of 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. It will feature ten teams, to be split into three groups of three (Group 1 and 2) or four (Group 3). The winner of each group will qualify for the FIFA Women's World Cup. Four teams will be seeded into groups based on the FIFA Women's World Rankings, with Group 1 containing seed 1, Group 2 containing seed 2, and Group 3 containing seeds 3 and 4. In Group 1 and 2, two unseeded teams will face each other in a semi-final. The winner of the semi-final will advance to the play-off final, to play against the seeded team for a spot in the Women's World Cup. In Group 3, the two seeded teams will face an unseeded team in the semi-finals. The winners of the semi-finals face each other in the play-off final for a spot in the Women's World Cup.
Australia and New Zealand will participate in friendly matches against the teams in Group 1 and Group 2, thereby ensuring that all teams play two matches at the tournament.[2]
In the play-off draw, four teams will be seeded into groups based on the FIFA Women's World Rankings, with a maximum of one seeded team per confederation. Teams from the same confederation will not be drawn into the same group. The highest seeded team will be automatically allocated to Group 1, with the second-highest seed similarly allocated to Group 2. The remaining two seeded teams will be allocated to Group 3.[2]
