5G Automotive Association

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) is a lobbying group for the European Union on behalf of 134 corporate financiers.[1] Their particular interest is governmental monetary investment in the widespread deployment of short-range 5G wireless technology by falsely claiming that the further development of autonomous vehicles depend on it and pushing a vehicle communication system dubbed C-V2X.[2]

History[]

The 5GAA lobbying group registered as a registered voluntary association in September 2016, by three German automotive manufacturers and five major 5G patent holders.[3][4] Since its founding, more than 130 companies have now joined to finance the 5GAA lobbying efforts.[5]

Organization[]

The 5GAA has a hierarchical membership structure based with the founding members at the top followed by the highest paying members. A higher membership status provides the benefit of increased influence within the organization.[6]

Priorities Blocked[]

The highest priority of the 5GAA is to reverse the decision by the European Parliament to use DSRC WiFi for V2X communications.[7] This decision makes the other efforts by the 5GAA moot as they are predicated on the use of 5G for connectivity.
