A Madea Homecoming is a 2022 American comedy film produced, written, and directed by Tyler Perry and his second film to be released by Netflix. Besides Perry, the film stars Cassi Davis-Patton, David Mann, Tamela Mann, Brandon Black, Gabrielle Dennis, and Brendan O'Carroll. It is the twelfth film in the Madea cinematic universe which tells the story of Madea partaking in her great-grandson's college graduation party as hidden secrets emerge. It was released on February 25, 2022. It is adapted from Perry's stage play Madea's Farewell Play, the first Madea film to be adapted from a stage play since A Madea Christmas. The film is also a crossover between the Madea franchise and the Irish sitcom Mrs. Brown's Boys.

The film was met with largely mixed reviews.

Plot[]

In Atlanta, Georgia, Mr. Brown (David Mann) is getting ready to make a barbecue and he starts putting in too much gasoline, Joe (Tyler Perry) confronts Brown about it but he doesn't listen. Joe then goes to the kitchen where Madea (also played by Tyler Perry) is, and through the window, they see Brown setting himself on fire and he ends up burning a tree in the front yard that Madea just planted.

Meanwhile, other family members are getting ready for Tim's (Brandon Black) college graduation celebration. Later, Cora (Tamela Mann) comes to Madea's house with groceries and they start talking about how riots caused places to burn down. Soon, Laura (Gabrielle Dennis) comes to the house with her friend Sylvia () who was her lawyer during her divorce.

Later on, Tim and his friend Davi () join the mix along with Tim's aunt Ellie () who is wearing her police uniform, and Joe confronts her about it and tells her to get rid of that police uniform, adding that police are criminals. She refuses, but later takes off her police uniform to make him be quiet about it.

Time passes and Aunt Bam (Cassi Davis) arrives saying she was tired, but she's back on her feet again when she sees Davi and Tim, and so she starts hitting on them. But then Joe tells her that he suspects the two boys are gay.

At the party, Agnes Brown (Brendan O'Carroll) and her daughter Cathy (Jennifer Gibney) arrive and after a rude gesture (doing the "Wakanda Forever" salute, thinking her hosts were true Africans), Cora slams the door on them but gives them a second chance, opening it again. Confused by why they are in the house (as well as Agnes making a joke on Madea's size) Madea grabs her by her scarf, lifts her up and starts threatening her, but Davi explains that Agnes is his great-aunt. When she notices everyone is silently staring at her suspiciously, Agnes says "Why do you all look like you have your knickers in a bunch?". But Madea, Joe, Bam and everyone else mishear "knickers" as "niggers" but she explains that "knickers" are underwear, even going as far as to lifting up her skirt to show what knickers are.

They all go to dinner at Red Lobster, where Mr. Brown and Agnes are having a good conversation but later Mr. Brown says that his blood sugar levels are getting low, so Cora checks in Madea's purse for some candy and gives it to Mr. Brown and Agnes. Madea comes back from the bathroom which she said there was a long line for and started talking about when she had a job as a stripper then Cora gets a little angry and reminded Madea that she wanted a nice dinner but sitting and talking about stripping and Madea shows that the restaurant was filled with strippers by singing "Up". Joe arrives wearing Black Lives Matter memorabilia and insulted Ellie because of her job as a cop. After dinner, they head back to the house where Tim's father, Richard () was waiting and when he puts his hand on Madea's arm to get her attention, she fires off her gun at the ceiling without warning, scaring everyone and making Joe defecate in his leather pants.

Later, Laura has a conversation with Agnes while washing the dishes, where she reveals that after graduation Davi will return to Ireland to take over his grandfather's farm, as agreed. Surprisingly, Laura is confused by this.

Tim tells everyone to come to the backyard to make a special announcement. He ends up coming out as gay, but no one is shocked, saying they had known already and that they were proud of him. Then, Sylvia reveals that she had been dating Richard in secret which further set off Madea. Then she makes Richard and Sylvia leave because they were not family, but Richard refuses. Madea then breaks out her shotgun, threatening him to leave, which he does.

After a while, Cora starts to notice Mr. Brown and Agnes are acting weird and so she thinks it's his blood sugar, she tells Madea that she gave them some of candy in her purse, and then Madea reveals that Cora actually gave Mr. Brown and Agnes marijuana. Almost on cue, Mr. Brown, who is high on marijuana is on the roof, in his underwear with a bed sheet draped around his back, acting as the "Brown Panther" and jumps off the roof gettng himself knocked out but still OK.

Later that night, Laura and Ellie discuss what happened with Richard and Sylvia, and then Madea comes in and tells them a story about when her "roommate" Rosa Parks "allegedly" stole her boyfriend in 1955, inadvertently starting the Montgomery bus boycott and the Civil Rights movement as a whole.

The next morning, Agnes comes by Madea's house to apologize for the way she acted and asks for some more of the chocolate-covered marijuana Madea had, explaining the energetic sensation she felt in the morning. Madea reveals it is her very own recipe and that she is willing to give it to Agnes. Then they start hearing inappropriate music nearby (Cardi B's WAP) and suspect it is Tim and Davi playing that music but it is Bam's phone actually. At the barbecue, tensions rise when Richard and Sylvia come back, and Madea comes in at the same time, Joe subsequently predicts "all hell gonna break loose". Davi starts to get angry with Richard which confuses some of the family members, this results in a fist fight and Richard ends up hitting Laura by accident. Davi asks her if she is okay, calling her "baby". Davi explains that he had been seeing Laura for the past two years, which angers some of the family members, including Tim. Davi even goes as far as to propose to Laura, who declines the offer.

Later in the evening, Laura discusses with Ellie how she and Davi got together; she was visiting Tim in college, and while waiting for him with Davi the two got attracted to each other and eventually started dating, but kept it a secret from Tim until graduation. But then Laura expresses confusion when she learned that Davi was going back to Ireland. Ellie then questions her the real reason declined Davi's proposal. Meanwhile, Tim is playing basketball and Davi comes to him trying to apologize but Tim doesn't forgive Davi. Later, Laura goes to Madea to talk about the drama that went on at the barbecue. Madea tells her to feel okay about it and apologize. Laura then leaves the bedroom, jokingly telling Madea to enjoy her weed. Madea then goes over to Tim and convinces him to forgive Davi. At the graduation, Madea and the family are sitting in the front row, waiting for Tim to give his speech. Tim unexpectedly rips up the speech he was going to give and delivers a different one centered around his family and apologizes to Davi and his mother Laura, he also gives credit to all the members of his family for all the love and support over the years, and when Tim gives credit to his father Richard, Madea then starts interrupting and insulting Richard.

After the graduation is over the family goes over to congratulate Tim and Davi, where Tim told Davi that he approves of him having a relationship with Laura. Then, Davi gets on one knee and proposes again to Laura who finally says yes. After seeing how in love Davi is with Laura, Agnes gives him her blessing to stay. And then explains that his grandfather won't need to know this; revealing that he's in prison for sleeping with a sheep in a hotel. After that, Agnes and Cathy get ready to leave to get back to Ireland when Agnes goes to say goodbye to Madea and thanks her for the recipe. During that conversation, Agnes asks Madea to visit Ireland, which Madea has been confusing with Iran for the whole movie and says she can't go because "there is too much sand". Madea and Agnes say their goodbyes one last time and then she leaves, ending the movie.

As the credits roll, Madea dresses up as Beyonce and parodies her 2018 performance at Coachella, singing "Lift Every Voice and Sing". She then parodies Mary J. Blige and does some songs by her. We then see a behind-the-scenes video of Madea (as Madea J. Blige) making a statement crediting the musicians and others for helping with the performance.
