Abu Dhabi Ports (Arabic: موانئ أبوظبي‎; formerly Abu Dhabi Ports Company and ADPC) is a ports, industrial zones and logistics operator based in capital of the United Arab Emirates and is part of ADQ, one of the region’s largest holding companies with a broad portfolio of major enterprises spanning key sectors of Abu Dhabi’s diversified economy.[1]

The Abu Dhabi Ports Group manages 11 ports and terminals in the UAE and Guinea.[2]

Entities within Abu Dhabi Ports Group include Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (KIZAD), ZonesCorp, SAFEEN Group (Abu Dhabi Marine Services), Maqta Gateway, MICCO Logistics, Abu Dhabi Maritime Academy, Abu Dhabi Maritime, Abu Dhabi Terminals (ADT), Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal, and Fujairah Terminals.

History[]

Originally formed in March 2006 as part of the restructuring of the commercial ports sector in the emirate, Abu Dhabi Ports was given control and regulatory enforcement power over all commercial ports assets previously owned by the Abu Dhabi Seaports Authority (ADSA).[3]

Ports[]

Abu Dhabi Ports operates all commercial, logistics, community and leisure ports in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, including its flagship deep-water container terminal Khalifa Port as well other ports across the emirate: Zayed Port, the Free Port, Musaffah Port and the five Western Region Ports in Al Dhafra that supports the local economy.

The Group also operates the 53 km New Musaffah Channel, the second longest channel in the Middle East after the Suez Canal which directly links Musaffah Port to the Arabian Sea.[4]

Industrial Cities & Free Zones[]

The Group’s 550sqkm Industrial Cities and Free Zone portfolio includes Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (KIZAD), and since its acquisition in 2020,[5] the five industrial cities that comprise ZonesCorp.[6]

Logistics[]

In 2020, MICCO Logistics was acquired by Abu Dhabi Ports under Abu Dhabi Ports Logistics, the Group’s dedicated logistical arm,[7] whereby it gained access to an extensive stock of temperature-controlled warehouses as well as a diversified transportation fleet. [8]

Digital[]

Established in 2016, Abu Dhabi Ports' digital arm Maqta Gateway supports Abu Dhabi Ports in its strategy of digitalisation and is spearheading the digital mandate of Abu Dhabi’s maritime, trade and government services in line with Abu Dhabi Economic Plan 2030.[9]

Maritime[]

Abu Dhabi Ports' Maritime portfolio includes SAFEEN Group, which since launching in 2013,[10] offers a range of maritime and quayside support services, including vessel assistance, navigational support, inspections and shipping maintenance at Abu Dhabi’s ports and beyond. Formerly known as "Abu Dhabi Marine Services", the company was rebranded as "SAFEEN", which is Arabic for "ship", in June 2016.[11]

Abu Dhabi Ports also owns and operates a centre of excellence to train cadets looking to advance their careers in the UAE’s maritime industry through its Abu Dhabi Maritime Academy which began operations in 2014.[12] The Academy's courses are locally and internationally approved by UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA), UAE Federal Transport Authority (FTA), International Association Lighthouse Authorities (IALA), and Lloyd’s Register.[13]

In May 2020, via an agreement between Abu Dhabi Ports and the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), Abu Dhabi Maritime was established to deliver on Plan Maritime (Abu Dhabi Coastal and Marine Framework Plan), for the development of integrated coastal zone management and to oversee the regulation of the emirate's waterways and ecosystems.[14]

Cruise[]

Located in Zayed Port, Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal first opened its gates in 2015. Spanning over 7,800 square meters, the terminal can host three cruise vessels simultaneously at over 900 meters of available berth space.

In 2018, Abu Dhabi Ports opened its second cruise destination for the Emirate at Sir Bani Yas Cruise Beach, the first and only dedicated cruise beach of its kind in the Middle East.[15]

Fujairah Terminals[]

In 2017, Abu Dhabi Ports signed a 35-year concession agreement with the only multi-purpose port on the East Coast of the UAE, the Port of Fujairah.[16]

Under its terms, Fujairah Terminals, a new operational arm of Abu Dhabi Ports was established, with over AED 1 billion earmarked for infrastructural investment. Commercial operations at Fujairah Terminals were officially kick-started in September 2017 as activities were ramping up to launch the expansion project the following year.[17]

Kamsar Container Terminal, Guinea[]

Following the signing of an agreement between Abu Dhabi Ports and Guinea in 2013,[18] Kamsar Container Terminal (KCT) was established in 2016 as an independent commercial terminal operated by Abu Dhabi Ports on belhaf of Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) in the West African country.[19]

Abu Dhabi Ports plans and organises all activities of the KCT, coordinates and supervises subcontractors’ activities, communicates with all port users, including port authorities (customs, and port state controls), monitors HSE performance and reporting.
