Acevedo is a surname of Portuguese origin which comes from the town of Azevedo in the Viana do Castelo District in Portugal. It means a grove of holly trees or hollywood, as the Portuguese and Spanish words for holly is acebo. The surname changed from Azevedo to Acevedo when it passed to Spain. As a consequence of colonization, it is widely spread in Latin America. There is also the Acebedo variant, whose origin resides in the Asturian municipality of Acebedo, Spain.
