Agaram Foundation is an educational foundation located in Tamil Nadu, India. This foundation was started on 25 September 2006 by Tamil film actor Suriya with a goal of improving the socio-economic status of rural society in Tamil Nadu by offering education to students.[1][2]

Activities[]

Surya (top) started the foundation on 25 September 2006. His brother, Karthi (centre) is co-owner. Surya's father, Sivakumar (bottom), is the key people of this foundation.[clarify]

Surya's father, actor Sivakumar honors the school toppers from rural areas and provides financial assistance to the poor students through his Sivakumar Education Trust from 1979.[3] Agaram foundation continues the tradition of providing such educational scholarships to students[3][4] Agaram foundation provides these scholarships for higher education to the students from Sri Lanka as well, who live in refugee camps located in Tamil Nadu.[4] In 2013, this foundation has donated Rs 1,000,000 for the Uttarakhand disaster relief fund.[5] In July 2017, the actor and his family donated their family home worth crores of rupees to the foundation.[6] Actor Surya announced in 2018, that his team at Agaram Foundation will execute to renovate and maintain 400 Government Schools across Tamil Nadu.[7]

In 2020 the foundation provided funds to Tanjore government hospital for the purchase of medical equipment and beds during COVID-19 pandemic.[8][9]

Project Vidhai[]

It has initiated a project named as Vidhai (Seed) to support the college education of underprivileged, meritorious and socio-economically struggling students living in different parts of the Indian state, Tamil Nadu.[10][11]

Mentorship Program[]

It provides a Mentorship Program called "Vazhikatigal" for school children living in the remotest parts of Tamil Nadu.[12] Recently Agaram Foundation launched two books — Vidhyasam Thaan Azhagu and Ulagam Pirandhadhu Namakkaga — in a function,where a young girl named Gayathri,who had completed her education with the aid from foundation shared how she had been able to pursue her studies despite many hurdles.[13]
