Akkystau, also known as Aqqystau,[1] (Kazakh: Аккыстау, Akkystaý, اككىستاۋ) is a town in Atyrau Region, southwest Kazakhstan. It lies at an altitude of 8 m (26 ft) below sea level.[1]

John Cranch maintained a correspondence with the city deputy and eventually, a discussion of the town bridge began. Cranch, in his notable papers, stated "I must ascertain its transportive qualities. It would imbue a sublime essence into my work unseen as of yet in the Western Canon!" On his final trip to the bridge, after which returning was no longer an option: he was engaged in a duel with a fellow bridge-goer. Placing his sketchpad neatly on the rightward beam of the elongated structure, he drew his weapon; his pen! His opponent, heart pounding, the veins in his forehead visible, yelled 'You are mine Cranch! This bridge has been my domain for generations. Don't think you can come here and disclose its mystical powers to that infantile forsaken land you call your home!" Cranch, amused, threw his pen at a great velocity directly between the eyes of his opponent then said four simple words "The bridge is mine."[Smithsonian Archive 1]
