Akupara Games is an American video game publisher and developer for indie games. Based in Los Angeles, California, the company was founded in 2016 by David Logan. The company also does contracting work for development and porting to console and mobile platforms.[1]
During the production of Logan's first title as a developer, Whispering Willows, Logan and his team did not experience the level of support they had anticipated and needed. Realizing the work to be done in terms of marketing and distribution, the team expanded their understanding of the life cycle for games to include post-launch support.[2] These efforts include leveraging the developer's title to the fullest via physical editions, soundtracks, and merchandise.[3] Logan founded the company to provide developers with a unique experience.[4] The company provides an independent focused development and publishing environment,[5] with a level of commitment that Logan was seeking from previous projects. One of the company's biggest pillars is the "Indie for Indies" structure,[6] meaning the company gives back and supports others in the indie space. Logan has also spoken regarding the process behind bringing a game to a storefront. [7]
Since founding, Akupara Games has worked with several third-party developers, including but not limited to Oscar Brittain on Desert Child, which secured a multi-platform release.[8] The company also publishes multiple award-winning titles including The Darkside Detective, published in 2017, received Best Game Narrative and Game of The Year at the IMIRT Irish Game Awards 2017. In 2019, the publisher had signed Danish developer Die Gute Fabrik's Mutazione for multi-platform release, including subscription service Apple Arcade. Mutazione was nominated for multiple awards[9] at the 2020 Independent Games Festival, ultimately winning Excellence in Audio.[10] Working with Queen Bee Games, the companies produced Spinch which received "Best of Platforming" in 2020 at the Yogscast Tiny Team Festival. The company also worked alongside Silver Lining Studio, a division of Akatsuki Taiwan, on Behind the Frame which has taken home seven awards from showcases and award shows, including NYX Game Award for Best Visual Art.[11]
As of 2021, Akupara Games is represented under Digital Development Management.[12]
