Alar Karis (born 26 March 1958) is an Estonian biologist, civil servant and the president-elect of Estonia.[1][2] He has been the head of Estonian National Museum since 2018.[1][3]

Karis previously served as the rector of Tartu University from 2007 and 2012, and as the Auditor General of Estonia between 2013 and 2018.[1][3]

In August 2021, he was approached by the president of the Riigikogu Jüri Ratas with a prospect of nomination for the post of president of Estonia in the upcoming autumn election.[4] He accepted the nomination[5] and his candidacy was subsequently endorsed by both coalition parties, the Reform Party[6] and the Centre Party.[7] On 31 August 2021, Karis was elected as the president of Estonia with a two thirds majority of 72 votes in the Riigikogu.[2][8] He will assume the office on 11 October 2021.[2]

Personal life[]

Karis was born in Tartu on 26 March 1958.[9][10] Harry Karis (b. 1930), the father of Alar, is a botanist.[11] He graduated from the Estonian University of Life Sciences and in 1999 he became a professor in the university.[10]
