Alexandru "Alec" Secăreanu (Romanian pronunciation: [alekˈsandru sekəɾeˈanu]; born 4 December 1984) is a Romanian stage, television, and film actor.

Early life[]

Alexandru "Alec" Secăreanu was born in Bucharest, Romania.[1] He completed drama study at the Caragiale Academy of Theatrical Arts and Cinematography (Universitatea Națională de Artă Teatrală și Cinematografică "I.L.Caragiale", UNATC) in 2007.[2]

Career[]

After appearing in a number of Romanian films, Secăreanu appeared in his first English-language role in director Francis Lee's God's Own Country (2017), in which he played a Romanian migrant worker Gheorghe, who begins a relationship with a sheep farmer played by British actor Josh O'Connor on a farm in rural West Yorkshire. Director Lee had insisted on casting a Romanian actor in the role of Gheorghe. After winning the role, he worked on a farm for two weeks before filming. His performance in God's Own Country earned him a London agent, membership of Equity (formerly officially titled the British Actors' Equity Association),[3] and a nomination for 2017 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) in Best Actor category.[4]

Theater[]

He appeared as a theater actor both on independent stages and in pieces of stage theaters, including the National Theatre Bucharest. He acted at theater festivals in Bucharest, Sibiu, Timișoara, Brăila and Piatra Neamț,[5] he also went on guest tours through Europe.[6]

In 2014, Secăreanu worked with Alexandra Pirici for a month-long installation at the Venice Biennale.[3]

At the end of 2015, Secăreanu gained fame after acting the lead role of Tyler Durden in the independent theater production Fight Club, directed by Ilinca Radulian. He helped to launch the Bucharest production of Les Ateliers Nomades which adapted Chuck Palahniuk's novel for the stage.[3]

Personal life[]

Secăreanu lives in Bucharest.[7]
