Alex Newport (born 12 September 1970) is an English record producer, mixer, songwriter, and composer, based in Los Angeles.

Biography[]

Newport was born in Wolverhampton, England and grew up in the Midlands area. He is currently living in Los Angeles, California, United States, and is the owner of Future Shock recording studio. Newport was the founding member of UK sludge metal/noise rock band Fudge Tunnel and the industrial metal project Nailbomb.

After producing records for At the Drive-In (In/Casino/Out, 1998 and Vaya, 1999) and The Mars Volta (Tremulant, 2002), in addition to projects with Knapsack, Samiam and Death Cab For Cutie, Newport became an in-demand producer.

His work with Death Cab for Cutie was Grammy nominated and, in 2011, he commenced an ongoing relationship with the Juno Award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter Dallas Green (aka City and Colour). In February 2011, Newport produced City and Colour’s Little Hell which was recorded and mixed entirely on analog tape. It was followed in 2013 with The Hurry and the Harm – their second consecutive album to reach #1 on the Canadian charts and a top 20 Billboard US album.

He also mixed and played bass on the album for the collaborative project between City and Colour and Pink called You+Me, as well as mixing for The Foo Fighters Nate Mendel's new project, Lieutenant.

In 2013, Newport produced Bloc Party's top five UK album Four. Other notable productions include work with The Sounds, Frank Turner, The Mountain Goats, Two Gallants and Tokyo's Polysics, mixing for Toronto band Weaves, and producing and mixing the debut album for Tigercub, as well as producing and mixing Bleached and Moaning's Sub Pop debut.

In 2019, Newport produced and mixed the debut album for Toronto's , Moaning's second full-length for Sub Pop, and the new album from Matt Costa for Dangerbird Records.

He also sings and performs as one half of Red Love, with (ex-Bloc Party) – their debut album was released in February 2017.

Newport composed and performed the original music score for the sci-fi movie Interpreters (Archetype Pictures),^[1] which was released in May 2020.
