Ali Maisam Nazary is a political advisor from Afghanistan currently serving as Head of Foreign Relations for the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan (NRF) since August 2021.

Education[]

Ali Nazary is an alumnus of the University of California, Los Angeles and the London School of Economics. He graduated from UCLA in 2012 with two bachelor degrees in Political Science and Iranian Studies. He received a Master of Science degree from the LSE in Comparative Politics and his focus was nationalism, nation- and state-building, and conflict studies.[1]

Career[]

Ali Nazary began his career in communications at Khorasan TV, hosting a weekly show on history and current affairs in Afghanistan. He then served as Director of Media Affairs for Abdullah Abdullah's 2014 presidential campaign.[1] Abdullah ultimately finished second to Ashraf Ghani in a closely contested election and was subsequently appointed Chief Executive of Afghanistan.

Following the election, Nazary took a hiatus from politics to work as an Afghan and Central Asian government relations specialist at Bellwether Partners, overseeing international relations consulting and management projects.[1] In 2016, he also became president of the Massoud Foundation USA, the U.S. branch of the Massoud family's Afghan relief organization, a position he continues to hold.[2]

National Resistance Front[]

As tensions between the Taliban and the government grew amidst the drawdown of NATO forces from Afghanistan, Nazary returned to politics as Head of Foreign Relations for Ahmad Massoud's political office in late 2018.[3] With the fall of Kabul and Ashraf Ghani's flight from the country, Massoud formed the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan, based in Panjshir.

Nazary, already serving as foreign policy advisor to Massoud, was appointed Head of Foreign Relations for the NRF.[4] He has been one of the most visible faces of the resistance, appearing on CNN,[5] the BBC,[6] India Today,[7] and other world media outlets to advocate for the interests of the National Resistance Front.
