The All India Insurance Employees Association (AIIEA) is a trade union in the life and general insurance public sector of India. The AIIEA was formed in July 1951 and its inaugural convention was held at Dhuru Hall of Dadar, Bombay, on June 30 and July 1, 1951. It is politically a left-oriented organisation.

Membership and achievements[]

When the AIIEA was formed, its membership was in the hundreds. Now it has a membership of over 100,000 with eight zonal units, 101 divisional units, and 2048 branch units throughout India.[citation needed] There are several female union office bearers at the branch, divisional, zonal and national levels; female membership exceeds 40%.[citation needed]

In its 60 years of existence it has resisted the privatization of public sector insurance companies, pension agreements and Mediclaim subsidies for both existing and retired employees.[citation needed]

Leaders[]

SZIEF is among the leading zonal units of AIIEA led by K. Swaminathan and Kunhikrishnan. ICEU Thanjavur Division is one of the leading divisional units of AIIEA, led in the past by stalwarts like R. Govindarajan, K. Sreenivasan, K. Lakshmanan, and S.R. Krishnamurthy. It is now led by R. Punniamurthy and S. Selvaraj.[2][3][4][5][6] It was on the 1st of June 1990, the SCZIEF came into being as 6th Zonal Unit of AIIEA with Com Saroj Chaudhary, the beloved leader of AIIEA inaugurating the Zonal Unit in a well-attended conference at Hyderabad. SCZIEF was carved out of SZIEF since a new LIC South Central Zonal Office was opened at Hyderabad. At the time of its formation the Zone had 10 Divisional Units in its jurisdiction spread over the states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. They now stand increased to 17 Units covering the States of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and the newly formed Telangana State. The membership of the Zone in 1990 was 83 %. Due to the continuous and relentless efforts put in by leaders and cadresacross the Zone, we are proud that SCZIEF has grown qualitatively and quantitatively and today we have a strong membership of 88.18 %.

The history of SCZIEF is a saga of militant struggles coupled with great sacrifices made by leaders, the cadres and the rank and file of the organization. SCZIEF came into existence at a time when AIIEA was in the thick of a political struggle against the attempts of US imperialism to impose the clause of Super 301 on India demanding opening up of vital sectors of the Indian Economy including the insurance. Since its inception, the organization had to confront difficult challenges from the powers that be,to weaken public sector LIC. But the organisation met the challenges deftly and has come out successful resulting in further consolidation of the organization.

The objective of SCZIEF has been to implement the calls of AIIEA effectively in the Zone. SCZIEF has been continuously striving to improve the political and ideological moorings of employees. Because of this reason, the employees’ have been waging relentless struggle to save public sector LIC and against the neo-liberal economic policies in all its manifestations. Our units have taken out innumerable Jathas to bring awareness among the people about the ill effects of neo-liberal economic policies. Millions of pamphlets have been distributed among people across the Zone highlighting the performance of LIC and the need for people to support it and invest in it. Moreover, SCZIEF has been in the forefront in unleashing sustained campaign to oppose FDI hike in sensitive sectors of the economy, in particular the insurance sector.During the course of the campaign, our units have organized seminars, conventions, signature campaigns, torchlight processions, massive pamphlets distribution, press meets, round table meetings involving fraternal organizations, meeting political leaders and elected representatives, approaching opinion makers and this campaign enormously contributed for mobilizing public opinion against reforms in insurance sector. At the same time, our units have also been regularly organising new business competitions for field force, agents’ motivation classes, customers and agents servicing camps etc. for the growth of our industry. These initiatives have, to a greater extent, contributed in protecting LIC in public sector and enhancing its brand image.

Our organisation just did not confine to the issues within the four walls of LIC. We have spread our presence outside as well by taking up the issues of the common people under the banner of People for India forums. We have been in the forefront in providing succor to the people who were victims of natural calamities thereby reflecting our concern for the needy in the society. Moreover, commemorating International women’s day, Ambedkar Jayanthi and AIIEA formation day, our units have been organising various social activities to help the poor and the deprived sections of the people every year. This approach of the organisation has received all round appreciation from general public at large.

Our organisation firmly believes that to defeat the twin offensive of neo-liberal economic policies and communalism, the unity of not only insurance employees but the unity of whole of the working class is of paramount necessity. It is because of these reasons conscious efforts are being made to integrate our campaign and struggle along with the general working class movements. In many centers our units and leadership have become the natural leaders for the joint struggle of the working class against the ill-conceived anti people economic policies. In many centers our cadres also are leading the movement of Workers, Youths, Peasantry, women, and science forum and in cultural fronts. We are always lending our support to the broader spectrum of democratic movement by mobilizing funds whenever there is need and also providing cadres to work among the unorganized sections.

SCZIEF will continue to do the good work under the guidance of AIIEA. It will strive to protect the interests of employees, LIC and the nation at large. Our motto is unity of the employees and working class. Together, we shall embark on the journey to achieve our vision and mission.
