From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Archbishop Alphonsus Liguori Penney (17 September 1924 – 12 December 2017) was a Canadian Catholic priest who was Archbishop of St. John's from 1979 to 1991. He was born in St. John's, Newfoundland.

Sexual abuse scandal[]

Penney resigned his position 2 Feb 1991 after a commission of inquiry — which he personally appointed — found that he was probably aware of sexual abuse of children by priests in his archdiocese.[1]
