Amantes Sunt Amentes (Latin for Lovers Are Lunatics), is the fourth studio album by Mexican rock band Panda, released on October 2, 2006 by Warner/Movic Records.

To promote the album, the songs Narcisista Por Excelencia, Los Malaventurados No Lloran and Procedimientos Para Llegar A Un Común Acuerdo were released as singles. The first, including its music video, were premiered on Los 10+ Pedidos on MTV.

It was notably nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album in 2008. It is the highest-selling album in their catalog to date, and was later certified gold and double platinum by AMPROFON for shipments of over 250,000 copies in Mexico.

Background[]

Monterrey rock act Panda was formed in 1996, but it wasn't established until 1997. The line-up consisted of frontman Jose Madero, lead guitar and back vocalist Jorge Garza (Ongi), bassist Ricardo Treviño and drummer David Castillo. After a series of rehearsals, he departed from the group and was soon replaced with local band Súper Azfalto drummer Jorge Vásquez (Kross). They would work on a demo to participate in a contest, which led the band getting signed to independent label Movic Records. In 2000, they recorded and released their debut album Arroz con Leche, gaining a wider wave of fans. Subsequently, it didn't receive as much media attention, but next release La Revancha Del Príncipe Charro (2002) get the stage to what direction the band was preparing for. The record proved successful in album sales over 100,000 and was certified platinum. They covered Joan Sebastian's song Maracas on the album, that also helped the band gain acclaim and coverage from critics.

Their third album, Para Ti Con Desprecio (2005), marked a stylistic shift for the group, departing from their typical humorous pop punk style the band was known for, adopting a more mature, darker aesthetic in sound and lyrics; their name also got revamped, too, since is capitalized and there is two "X" in "PXNDX", instead of "A's" that will continue its use in their following releases. The record caused the band's breakthrough, catapulting the band's career into mainstream success. Following the release of the album, it was received with a gigantic fan backlash over alleged plagiarism since Arroz con Leche of guitar riffs and similar lyrics from a number bands, the likes of Green Day, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, MxPx, Sum 41, Inspection 12 and many more from their contemporaries. It would affect the band's reputation for years to come.^[1] Groups against the band were formed afterwards, and labelled themselves as "anti-Pandas". As a result of their change in sound and image, accusations increase, blaming that they were buying into the emo label/scene that was also breaking through into mainstream media at the moment.
