Ambulante Documentary Film Festival or Ambulante is an annual international documentary film festival organized by the Mexican non-profit organization Documental Ambulante A.C.[1] The first edition of the festival was held in 2006. The festival tours Mexico for two months, screening documentaries in over 130 venues.[2] In 2014 and 2015, Ambulante held Ambulante California, a version of the festival in the United States.

Description[]

Ambulante is the largest documentary festival in Mexico. The festival was founded by Mexican actors Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna, and creative producer Elena Fortes in 2006.[2] Films are screened in locations around Mexico on a two month tour between February and May. Most of Ambulante's programming is free. Ambulante also collaborates with Mexican production company Canana, Mexican chain of movie theater Cinépolis and Morelia International Film Festival for organizing the festival.[3]

History[]

Ambulante Film Festival was inspired after Gael García Bernal watched the documentary Tropic of Cancer that failed to get a release in his home country. Documental Ambulante A.C. was funded in 2005 by Gael García Bernal, Diego Luna, and Elena Fortes.[4]

In 2014, Ambulante was launched for first time in Latinoamercia. It toured in California attracting 2000 people.[5][6]

In 2017, Ambulante received funds most of its funds from the United States, and federal and states funds.[citation needed]

In 2019, Ambulante was laureated with the Prince Claus Award in documentaries, given by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.[7]

In April 2020, García Bernal and Luna announced Ambulante en Casa, a streaming version of the festival. [8] In November 2020, the festival banded with other Mexican Film Festivals to create Un Festival Mexicano for facing COVID-19's challenges and lack of government support.

In March 2021, Ambulante partnered with Cinema Planeta to provide access to teachers to documentary films.[9] In April of the same year, Ambulante partnered with Netflix for launching Miradas Fund, a $750,000 fund to support Indigenous and Afro-descendent documentary filmmakers located in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua[10]

Controversy[]

In September 2021, ex-collaborators of Ambulante declared to Mexican media that Gael García and Diego Luna received more than 160 million Mexican pesos (80 million dollars) from governmental support between 2005 and 2016.[11] However, the same ex-collaborators mentioned that that was not illegal.[12] Gael García and Diego Luna claimed that they didn't receive that money and donations has been used for promoting documentary film production in Mexico.[13]
