Derrick Sarfo Kantanka, known by the stage name Amerado, is a Ghanaian rapper from Kumasi.[1][2][3] He is the curator of Yeete Nsem, Ghana's first newscasting rap series.[4][5]

Early life and education[]

Amerado was born and raised in Ejisu, Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. He attended KNUST Senior High School for his senior high school education.[6]

Music career[]

Amerado's career began when he was discovered by Azee Ntwene in 2015 as he emerged third at the Solid FM Freestyle Show to join fellow rapper Strongman Burner at MicBurnerz Music.[7] He was featured on a song by Mix Master Garzy intended to promote peace around Ghana's 2016 general elections.[8]

In 2017, Amerado released his lead single "I AM" which announced his presence in the music industry in Ghana.[9] The song was rated 3rd in Pulse Ghana's Top 10 Ghanaian songs in January 2017.[10] He released his first EP titled Rapmare under the MicBurnerz Music label in November 2017.[11] In 2018, Amerado was featured on the hip-hop song 'Biibi Ba' by Sarkodie.[12][13] The song was nominated for the Best Hiphop Song and Best Edited Video at the 2019 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.[14]

On 8 August 2019, a list published by Joy FM's myjoyonline.com indicated that he was listed in one of Ghana's most celebrated DJs, DJ Black, and all time best rappers in Ghana.[15]

On 1 October 2020, the founding father of the popular music genre hiplife, Reggie Rockstone took to his Twitter page to announce Amerado as one of the best rappers to ever come from Ghana.[16]

In 2020, Amerado joined Shatta Wale and other rappers in Kumasi to release Ahodwo Las Vegas.[17][18]

In August 2021, Amerado had a freestyle & interview session with Tim Westwood on Capital Xtra in London,[19] GRM Daily reported his freestyle session as one of the best on the show.[20]

Amerado on 26th October 2021 released his second extended play titled Patience and feature names like Black Sherif, Shatta Wale, Fameye, YPee, Kweku Flick, others with production from Azee Ntwene, Izjoe Beatz, Samsney and ItzCJ Madeit. The EP peaked at Number 1 on music streaming platforms Apple Music, Audiomack, Boomplay and Youtube.[21][22][23]

Style[]

Amerado raps and sings mostly in the Twi dialect of the Akan language of Ghana, but he sometimes uses English as well. His stage name, Amerado, is chosen to reflect his command in the music scene. It means "Governor (Emperor)" in his native Akan.[24][25]

Ambassador[]

Amerado is the brand ambassador for Ghana-made chocolates, an agenda led by the Ghana Cocoa Board.[26] He wrote the song Ghana Chocolate to promote the agenda.[27]
