American Intercon School (AIS; Khmer: សាលារៀនអន្តរទ្វីបអាមេរិកាំង) is a private general education school accredited by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports with a Khmer-American curriculum from Kindergarten to Grade 12.[1] It operates in six different campuses in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The academic year at the American Intercon School is divided into two semesters beginning in the middle of August, and the beginning of January.

History[]

American Intercon School is a subsidiary of the Mengly J. Quach Education[2] and a sister company of Aii language center.[3] It was founded in Phnom Penh on October 10, 2005, by Mengly Jandy Quach.[4]

American Intercon School's passing rate of national exam in grade 12 is generally higher than most schools in Cambodia when compared to the national figure from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (Cambodia). As a result of the quality, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (Cambodia) allowed American Intercon School to prepare ourselves for the ASEAN's Quality Education award which was held soon in Brunei in 2015.[5]

Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (Cambodia) has rated American Intercon School (AIS) the best in its nationwide school inspection. Phnom Penh Municipal Department of Education, Youth and Sport also presents awards of recognition to American Intercon Schools in appreciation of the excellence in Management, Education Administration, Learning Environment and Teaching Techniques every Academic Year.[6]

In response to such accomplishments, AIS boasts the highest number of students studying overseas upon graduation. AIS students have also been highlighted in numerous national and regional platforms showcasing its vision.[7]

The School had developed to six campus across the city with an enrollment of over 7,000 students.

During Covid-19 period[]

As the COVID-19 pandemic developed in Cambodia, the founder of the school, Mengly Jandy Quach warned that "the pandemic itself was not the biggest problem for schoolchildren but the mental and physical trauma they had to go through with keeping up their studies via online and staying home for so long."[8] the American Intercon School was part of select schools to remain open in July 2020, due to higher compliance to official rules of the Ministry for Health.[9] While calling for prudence, Quach also alerted the government on the urgent need to reopen schools in Cambodia because of the very limited access of the population to technologies used for online learning.[10]

Since the pandemic began, most schools did not have enough tuition fees to cover paying wages, rents, utilities and interest on loans and they would have to suspend their operations. Rental fees were the biggest issue, and while there were some supports from the government and financial institutions, these simply were not enough. As an educational institution, funding requires more than just solely the tuition fee. It also relied on the school bus, food, uniforms, books and other administration fees to support the business model.[11][12]

Despite the pandemic adding on to the financial pressure on private schools in Cambodia, the enrollment of students at American Intercon School was increased "substantially", so much so that a new building being inaugurated in Chrouy Changvar to expand the campus and accommodate more students.[13]

School Life[]

American Intercon School is divided into four sections: Preschool (Preschool and Kindergarten), Elementary (from Grade 1 to Grade 6), Junior High School (Grade 7 to Grade 9 and High School (Grade 10 to 12). AIS summer school starts in August in order to prepare students for new academic year.[14]

The School emphasizes the transmission soft skills in an effort to provide holistic education to its students.[15] Students are also constantly monitored and guided to ensure they eat proper healthy food that gives them the right nutrition, an important factor in the child's learning.[16]
