The American School of Madrid (ASM) was founded in 1961. It is a private, K-12 international school in Madrid, Spain. ASM provides an education to almost 1000 students from the United States, Spain, and dozens of other countries.

History[]

The American School of Madrid was founded in 1961 by members of The American Club in Madrid.

Its first home was spread across several buildings in the city: Calle Joaquin Costa, Calle Dr. Fleming and Calle Pinar. Kelly Gardener was the first Headmaster. In 1962, ASM Board architect, Bob Parker, obtained a ten-acre plot on the outskirts of Madrid, near Aravaca, as a future home of the school.  On November 2, 1967, ASM opened in its current location.

Campus[]

The ASM campus is located 12 kilometers west of the center of Madrid, in Pozuelo de Alarcón. The facilities were inaugurated in 1967 and currently include five main buildings; a Lower School building which includes classrooms, as well as a lower school learning commons-library, a Lower School science lab, a full gymnasium and a playground, a state-of-the-art, zero-energy Middle School, inaugurated in 2021, and an Upper School with learning commons and cafeteria renovated in 2016, a Center for the Arts that houses art, music, and drama classroom, a 600-seat auditorium, and a large multi-purpose room. The Science Center and Athletics Complex include Upper school science labs, a full-sized gymnasium, a fitness and weight room, and a health and yoga room. Outdoor P.E. facilities include 2 tennis courts, an all-purpose weather track; a turf soccer field; a baseball diamond and a multipurpose covered outdoor area. ASM has a one-on-one laptop program from Kinder 3 to Grade 12. There are digital labs, one is dedicated to digital arts and one to robotics. Technology is integrated into all grades and specific technology courses are offered.

The curriculum is similar to that of U.S. private college-preparatory schools. Instruction is in English. The School's testing program includes the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP), National Merit, and College Board tests. Spanish, French, and Mandarin are taught as foreign languages. The majority of graduates attend colleges and universities in the United States, Spain, and the United Kingdom. There is an after-school program for sports and extracurricular activities. The School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, the International Baccalaureate Organization, and the Spanish Ministry of Education.
