Icons or 7Icons (/aɪˈkɒnz/ or Indonesian pronunciation: [aykens]) is an Indonesian electropop girl group formed on 28 October 2010.[1] The group currently has five members: PJ, Vanilla, T-Sha, Grace, and Mezty.
The group's debut single was "Playboy".
History[]
2010[]
The group was formed by friends from three big cities in Indonesia:
- Surabaya (A.Tee, Vanila, Pj, Natly)
- Jakarta (Linzy, Gc)
- Bandung (Mezty)
Members of the group come from, and previously have come from, various related professions: modeling, fashion designer, dancer, presenter, teacher, college student, and disc jockey. After the initial idea for the group was suggested by A.Tee, they decided to move to Jakarta and bought a small apartment to act as their headquarters. Whilst searching for a music label, 7icons hired a personal dance coach and took vocal lessons, all of which were self-financed. As the group had large expenditure (for coaches, studio, etc.) and no income, Mezty sold her car to help them cover costs.[2] After 7icons signed a contract with in Indonesia, they prepared for their debut and started promoting their single track Playboy.
2011[]
7icons debuted with their first single "Playboy" (created by Dewiq/Dj Sumantri) on 18 April 2011, at 07:07 am on the radio in the Indonesian television music show "Derings" (on the TransTv channel). 7icons also became main cast members on teen drama mini-series "Go Go Girls", with "Playboy" as the opening & closing theme, on the TransTV channel. The single track was well received, reaching number two on the national music chart in its first week, and then became a TVC jingle in their first TV commercial with Telkom Indonesia. The group's schedule became tighter as their popularity grew. After long-lasting single "Playboy", 7icons released a 2nd single, "Jealous", with darker themes and content. "Jealous" launched along with "Penjaga Hati" on Indonesian television show Dahsyat (on RCTI.18) in September 2011. 7icons held a mini-concert, themed as a pyjama party, as the launch of their mini-album, "Lovable". Their fan base grew through Indonesia; their fanclub was established, named "ICONIA". Until the end of the year, 7icons successfully performed throughout Indonesia. 7icons was the only female group who performed at Road to 2011 Southeast Asian Games, held in Borobudur. To close the year, the group released The Journey of Love, the first full album from an Indonesian girl band, on 21 December 2011. The album is not sold by conventional methods, but via special booths in Naughty Accessories.
2012[]
In 2012, The Journey of Love was marketed by . The group approved fan club "ICONIA" to become their official fan club, "Official ICONIA". 7icons also played as guests on several private television stations in Indonesia. They had the opportunity to collaborate with Bebi Romeo through his song "Cinta Cuma Satu", on the album , received several awards in the fields of music and appearance, and were appointed as "Ambassador(s) of the Environment" 2012. 7icons also had the opportunity to do a concert collaboration between countries, held in Gangnam, South Korea. They performed "Playboy" and "Cinta Cuma Satu", with "Cinta Cuma Satu" translated into Korean.
2013[]
Starting in 2013, 7icons underwent image changes with the theme of rebirth. The idea was to go from the reborn phase of life to meet the mature phase. The rebirth concept was launched simultaneously with the launch of their first American single, "Outta Diz World" in March 2013. The single "Outta Diz World" was released on 7icons' compilation album. The album was the second album of 7icons and the first time they had released an album in the U.S.[3] 7icons & Keci Music also opened the talent audition "7icons: LOOKING FOR A NEW ICON" with RCTI in a search for a new "ICON" for 7icons, which was held in February 2013 to replace Vanila (the "Elegant ICON", who decided to focus on her marriage).[4] On 8 February 2013, T-Sha officially become a new "ICON", representing "Rebel ICON". 7icons released Cinta 7 Susun as their first musical dramedy soap opera with the soundtrack "Cinta 7 Susun"(created by Anda Wardhana & Deni Indrajaya), first airing on 28 January 2013 on RCTI and produced by Sinemart.[5] The single "Cinta 7 Susun" was also a winner in the television musical program "TOP POP", earning "Top Song of the Day" on 28 May 2013. "Playboy (Bali mix)" won "Top Song of the Day" on 12 June 2013, and single "Cinta Cuma satu (Korean Mix)" did so on 5 July 2013. In a "Suka Suka Uya" (a talk show on the MNCTV channel) interview with Uya Kuya, Pj (Cute Icon) revealed 7icons's term "Captain Class", their term for the leader of the group; Pj is the Captain in 7icons. 7icons covered Feliz Navidad, included on the Keci Music Christmas Songs Compilation.
2014[]
7icons decided to resign from due to work, contract and distribution problems. As a result, they started working self-managed.[6] In August they released & produced "Mana Tahan", an electropop dance single created by Andi from the group 'Beage' and Dwi Andri.
Starting on November 1, 2014, 7icons officially transformed into 7he Icons since the reduction of 7icons personnel, which left 4 personnel. In addition, 7he Icons changed their music concept from K-pop to Western.
However, unlike 7icons, which has a sexy, modern, and beautiful image, 7he Icons looks exactly like the 1970s and 1980s style from appearance to singing style.
