Anil Devgan (25 May 1969 — 5 October 2020) was an Indian filmmaker, screenwriter and the son of Prem Prakash Devgan[1] and the first cousin of actor Ajay Devgan.[2] He directed films such as Raju Chacha and Blackmail. He died at the age of 51 due to cardiac arrest at the night of 5 October 2020.[3][4]

From a young age, he had a creative mind fascinated by stories and had the passion to tell them. He was an avid music lover and was trained in Tabla and Martial Arts. After graduating in 1989 from Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, New Delhi he joined the film industry after being encouraged by Ajay Devgan and assisted on many movies with directors Sunil Agnihotri, Anees Bazmee and Raj Kanwar before finally making his debut as a director in 2000. He was married and had one son.

Career[]

He is best known for his work as a director for the path-breaking films Raju Chacha (2000), Blackmail (2005) and Haal-e-Dil (2008). He has worked with his brother Ajay Devgan in Raju Chacha and sister in law Kajol in Blackmail. Raju Chacha was one of the most expensive films of those times and for the first time in Bollywood history a lot of animation was used. It had a major worldwide opening with the biggest premiere for a film then in Los Angeles. Raju Chacha got Screen award for best animation and was nominated for best action and best film, and for best art direction. Music was path breaking as it was very different from other films of that time.The film was a huge flop as per boxofficeindia.com as against a budget of Rs 25 crores, it made a net collection of Rs 10.7 crores only. It received mixed reviews but mainly appreciation of Anil's work. The Hindu stated, 'Raju Chacha is touted as a film for children because of 'courage comes in all sizes.' Planet Bollywood said 'The film is very well done with great special effects. Direction of a first-timer is adequate. He shows great promise as a director.' He was also the creative director in 'Son of Sardar' and also in 'Shivaay'.
