Antezana in Spanish or Andetxade in Basque[1] is a village in the municipality of Vitoria-Gasteiz in the province of Álava, Basque Country, Spain.

Antezana is a village located 12 km northwest of the city of Vitoria. This village is located next to the Foronda airport terminal, so it has good access via expressways.

Toponym[]

Antezana is a surname that was used by two Spaniards who traveled to South America in the 19th century, one of which remained in the Chilean city of Santiago and one in La Paz, Bolivia. It is common nowadays to hear this surname in Bolivia while in Chile there are only few who still retain the name.

By resolution adopted on January 30, 2011 by the Antezana de Foronda Council of Neighborhood Assembly, the official name of the council was finally approved, which was: ANTEZANA/ANDETXA.

Population[]

Antezana de Foronda's population has declined significantly in recent decades. In 1960 it had 113 inhabitants and this has decreased over the years to 86 inhabitants in 2008.

History[]

Antezana de Foronda belonged to the municipality of Foronda, of which it was the capital, until it was absorbed by the Vitoria municipality in the 1970s. The Foronda Airport was built near the village. Currently it is the closest town to the airport terminal and runways.

Monuments[]

The most striking aspect of the village is the church of San Miguel that dates from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Festivities take place on 29 September.
