The name of rivalry for the Appalachian State-Charlotte sports series has been in dispute ever since the Appalachian State Mountaineers first met the Charlotte 49ers in 1971. Talk about an interstate rivalry was always hanging around, but the talks never really went anywhere until Appalachian State head coach Shawn Clark called it a rivalry ahead of the 2020 football matchup.[1] Many, however, ridiculed the idea, citing how Charlotte had never beaten Appalachian State in football. Charlotte fans responded that that mindset was slightly unfair, seeing as how Charlotte led the series' in basketball[2] and baseball.[3] Even so, many sources and fans say that the game should not be considered a rivalry until the football series becomes competitive.[4][5]

The two schools have only matched up 3 times in football, and neither school seems to know whether or not they're rivals. The 49ers seem to view it a natural, seeing as the campuses are only 2 hours apart,[6] and some argue that with the fast rise of both programs, it should be considered a football rivalry. However, others have said that it isn't a rivalry until Charlotte wins, notably Charlotte Head Coach Will Healy.[7]
In actual gameplay, Appalachian State has dominated, winning every game by at least 15 points.[8] The next matchup is scheduled for 2026, the first of a four-game series between the two schools.[5]

Statistically, Charlotte has dominated, with three of their last 5 wins in the series decided by double digits.[2] Appalachian State has only won twice during that span.[9][10]

The baseball rivalry is arguably the most heated between athletic departments. Because of the close proximity of the two campuses, the teams often schedule multiple games over multiple seasons before taking around a decade-long hiatus, and then scheduling a lot more games.[3]
