Reverend Father Araliya Jayasundara (born 11 June 1977) OSB, is a Sri Lankan Roman Catholic priest, Choral director, and educator.[2] He is a Benedictine monk of the Silvestro Benedictine congregation of Sri Lanka.[3] He served as the vice principal of St. Anthony's College, Kandy and was appointed as the principal of Trinity College, Kandy in 2020.[4]

Early life and education[]

Jayasundara Mudiyanselage Chandimal Araliya Jayasundara was born 11 June 1977 in Kandy, Sri Lanka. He attended the nursery of Good Shepherd Convent, and had his primary and secondary education at Trinity College, Kandy. After graduating from Trinity College in 1996, he joined the Sylvestro-Benedictine order to enter into monastic life. He was trained at the Monte Fano seminary in Amapitiya and at St. Benedict's Monastery, Adisham, Haputale.[5]

Jayasundara obtained his Master of Arts in philosophy from the University of Peradeniya. He holds degrees in Theology from National and International Universities, Post Graduate Diplomas in Education, Development Practices and Management, and a Master of Science degree in Organisational and Human Resource Management from the PGIA of the University of Peradeniya. He studied monastic theology at the Pontifical University of St. Anselm - Rome and obtained his Licentiate degree in 2017. Jayasundara has also been a "Senior Fulbright research scholar" at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he studied Religious Pluralism in the USA.[4]


Jayasundara was appointed as a full-time volunteer at St. Anthony’s College, Kandy, on 6 September, soon after his ordination. He was appointed as a Government English teacher at Tissa Maha Vidyalaya in the Eastern province in 2009 while remaining as the choral director of St. Anthony’s during that time.

After he was transferred back to St. Anthony’s College, Kandy in, 2012, he served as the headmaster of the primary department (2013-2015), Master of Discipline, prefect of games, and as the warden of the Benedictine Fathers’ College. In return from Rome in 2015, he continued to serve as the deputy principal of St. Anthony’s College.

He entered the Sri Lanka Principal’s Service, where he was ranked as 252nd on the island from a total of 1918 recruits. Thereafter, he was at Dharmaraja College Kandy for his internship as a principal. [6]

Jayasundara was appointed as the principal of Trinity College, Kandy by the Anglican Bishop of Colombo, Rev. Dhiloraj Canagasabey and the Bishop of Kurunegala, Rev. Keerthisiri Fernando with effect from 1 October 2020.

Jayasunadara is the first clergy to take up the position since 1988, where Rev. W. G. Wickremasinghe ended his term as principal. He is also the first Catholic priest to take over the reins as the principal of Trinity College, which is fully governed and managed by the Anglican Church of Ceylon. [7]
