Founded in 2014 and located in Sydney, Australia – just a few kilometres south of the city – Archie Rose Distilling Co. is Australia’s most highly awarded distillery, producing a diverse range of whiskies, gins, vodkas, rums, as well as one-off collaborations, limited releases and spirits experiences. It is one of the City of Sydney’s first independent distilleries of since 1853.

History[]

Archie Rose Distilling Co. was founded by Will Edwards in 2014. Although the idea of starting a distillery in Sydney had been on his mind for some time, the strategic planning of launching Archie Rose started after Edwards visited some of the first established distilleries since the prohibition in New York and Brooklyn in December 2012.[1][2][3][4]

Edwards later gained practical knowledge in Tasmania where he met with some of the pioneers of the modern Australian distilling industry, including Bill Lark of Lark Distillery, Peter Bignell of Belgrove Distillery and the distillers at Redlands Distillery.[5][6]

On returning to Sydney, Edwards enlisted Peter Bailly, Australia's only still maker at the time, to hand-build three copper pot stills, all steam heated by a gas-powered steam boiler.[7][8]

Archie Rose officially launched to the public in March 2015 as both a Distillery and Bar located in Rosebery, Sydney. The company initially produced three spirits; Signature Dry Gin, Original Vodka and White Rye—though casks of Rye and Single Malt Whisky were laid down early, with the Archie Rose whiskies launching in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

Currently, Archie Rose produces a range of gins, whiskies, vodkas and rums, as well as limited-edition spirits, experimental releases and collaborations with the likes of Sydney Opera House and .

Since 2015, the company has provided its customers with the opportunity to create their own Tailored Spirits including gin, vodka and whisky, via an online platform that guides them through the process.

In 2020, Archie Rose commenced production at its new distillery in Banksmeadow, Sydney, 4km south of the original Rosebery site. The new distillery is one of the most innovative in the world, designed and constructed from the ground up by founder, Will Edwards, and Master Distiller, Dave Withers.

The original Rosebery distillery, located next to the Archie Rose Bar, was converted into an event space and home of Archie Rose’s popular Spirits Experiences, including Blend Your Own Gin Classes, Cocktail Masterclasses and Whisky Tours.

In 2020, Archie Rose launched a take-home cocktail offering, including a seasonal rotation of Bottled Cocktails and a Canned Cocktail range consisting of four flavours; Gin & Tonic with lemon and pepperberry, Vodka & Soda with native blood lime, Vodka Mango Spritz with lime and chilli and Blackberry Spritz with lemon myrtle and juniper.
