Argylle is an upcoming spy film directed and produced by Matthew Vaughn. Adapted by Jason Fuchs, it is based on the 2022 novel of the same name by first-time author Ellie Conway. The film features an ensemble cast consisting of Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O'Hara, John Cena, Samuel L. Jackson, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, and Rob Delaney.

Premise[]

A world-class spy suffering from amnesia is tricked into believing he is a best-selling spy novelist. After his memories and lethal skills return, he goes down a path of revenge against the shadowy organization he used to work for, the Division.[1]

Production[]

In June 2021, it was reported Matthew Vaughn would direct and produce Argylle for Marv Studios.[2] In July 2021, it was announced the film would be written by Jason Fuchs as an adaptation of the 2022 novel of the same name by first-time author Ellie Conway, with Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O'Hara, John Cena, and Samuel L. Jackson joining the cast.[3] Dua Lipa is set to make her acting debut in the film, and will also provide original music for the title track and score.[4][5] In August 2021, the distribution rights to the film were sold to Apple TV+ for $200 million.[6] Principal photography began that same month in London with cinematographer George Richmond, and took place across various locations in Europe.[2][7][8] The production used studios in Greenford, Park Royal, and Bovingdon to shoot the film. Background shots were filmed in Greece and the United States.[9] In September 2021, Ariana DeBose was added to the cast.[10] In November 2021, Rob Delaney was confirmed as a cast member.[11]

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Vaughn jokingly credited the COVID-19 pandemic as the reason he was able to work with an ensemble cast.[12] He describes the film as his ode to 1980s action thrillers like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon. When asked about casting Cavill, he said: "I needed someone who was born to play Bond — which Henry is — and then nick him before Bond did. He plays a larger-than-life action hero with a wink. It's very different from Kingsman."[13]

Future[]

Argylle is intended to serve as the start of a franchise consisting of at least a trilogy of films.[3]
