Lochhead started his career with Heart of Midlothian before transferring to Manchester United in a swap deal in 1921, with Hearts exchanging him for £530 and Tom Miller. After scoring 50 goals in 153 appearances for United, he transferred to Leicester City in 1925, where he netted over 100 times and was part of the side who finished league runners-up in 1928–29.
