This species was first described by John S. Dugdale in 1964 as Xanthorhoe campbellensis using a male specimen collected at Shoal Point, Campbell Island by K. Rennell.[2][6] In 1971 Dugdale offered a new combination for this species assigning it to the Asaphodes.[5]
