Aset Armanūly Irgaliyev (Kazakh: Әсет Арманұлы Ерғалиев; born 18 June 1986)[1] is the Minister of the National Economy of the Republic of Kazakhstan from 18 January 2021.[2] At the age of 34, Irgaliyev became the youngest person in Kazakhstan's history to hold a ministerial post.[3]

Prior before becoming a minister, Irgaliyev studied abroad where he obtained number of degrees, Irgaliyev worked as an economist in several public organizations before joining the government in 2018 as a Vice Minister of National Economy.[3]

Biography[]

Early life and education[]

Irgaliyev was born on 18 June 1986 in the city of Kostanay. Irgaliyev was solely raised by his mother Asyl Ergaliyeva (born 1961) as his father died in car accident in 1993 at the age of 32.[4]

Having the main speciality in economics, Irgaliyev in 2008 graduated from the KIMEP University with a bachelor's degree in Economics of Public Policy. In the same year, under the international exchange program, he graduated from the Jönköping International Business School in Sweden with a bachelor's degree in Science in International Economics. In 2009, he obtained a master's degree of Science in Economics from University of York in the England. In 2010, Irgaliyev graduated from the University of Nottingham, UK, with a master's degree in Philosophy of Economics.[5]

Career[]

In 2010, Irgaliyev worked as a regional policy analyst for Eastern Europe and the Caucasus in the Economic Department of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in London. From October 2011 to January 2013, he was a chief regional analyst until becoming the director of the Center for Entrepreneurship Development, vice president, deputy chairman of the management board, first deputy chairman of the management board of JSC Economic Research Institute. From February 2016, he served as the institute chairman. In October 2016, Ergaliev was appointed as advisor to the chairman of the board of JSC NMH Baiterek. He worked there until becoming the head of the Project Management Center of the Prime Minister's Office in July 2018.[6]

On 3 September 2018, Irgaliyev was appointed as a Vice Minister of National Economy.[7] From 12 March 2019, he promptly worked as a deputy head of the Prime Minister's Office until being reappointed to the post of the First Vice Minister of National Economy on 19 August 2019.[8]

On 18 January 2021, by the Decree of the President, Irgaliyev became the Minister of National Economy, succeeding role that was previously held by Ruslan Dälenov.[9][10]

Personal life[]

Irgaliyev lives in Nur-Sultan and is married to Qamila Ergaliyeva (born 1990) with whom he has two children.[4]

During a briefing at the Central Communications Service, Irgaliyev revealed that he was studying Kazakh daily for about an hour and a half with a tutor from the Ministry, obliging that he would eventually speak fluently.[18]
