Qasim Faktoo (also known as Mohammad Qasim) is a Kashmiri Kashmiri sepratist.

As of May 2020, he remains in jail since 1993. Faktoo has been charged of being involved in the murder of Hriday Nath Wanchoo, an activist. He has been sentenced to life imprisonment until death.[1][2] In July 2001, he was acquitted of by the Supreme Court, which stated, "the Superintendent of Police, CBI had therefore not recorded the confessional statements in conformity with the provision of law and that therefore the confessional statements could not be considered as a substantive piece of evidence against the accused persons." Which shows hypocrisy involved in his case and false allegations[3][4]

He was released in 1999 for a short span of time.[5][6] In 2012, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court ruled that he must be imprisoned until death.[1] He earned his PhD in Islamic Studies in the prison, and had been working from another degree.[1] In 2016, India's Supreme Court rejected the proposition for releasing him.[7][8]

His wife Asiya Andrabi is also a leader and chairperson of banned human rights organisation Dukhtaran-e-Millat.[9][10]

Education[]

Faktoo graduated in Commerce from Islamia College Srinagar. He went on to obtain various academic degrees like MA, MPhil in Islamic Studies, and Maulvi Fazil from Kashmir University. He has been also awarded PhD in 2006 in Islamic studies.[11]
