From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Contemporary Art Galleries Association (AGAC) is a non-profit organization created in 1985, whose head office is located in Montreal.

Mission[]

Founded in Montréal in 1985, the Contemporary Art Galleries Association (AGAC) is a non-profit organization whose primary mandate is to further develop the recognition and prosperity of the contemporary art market in Canada. The association actively contributes to the dissemination and promotion of Canadian artists via exhibitions and other major events organized in Québec, Canada and internationally. Beyond defending the moral and economical interests of its members through a rigorous code of ethics, the association also fosters the public's interest in visual arts and encourages the emergence of new contemporary art collectors.[1]

Members[]

AGAC regroups galleries in Halifax, Montréal, Québec, Ottawa, Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver.[2]

Projects[]

The projects carried out by the AGAC in recent years :

  • Papier

Created by AGAC in 2007, Papier Contemporary Art Fair is the largest art fair in Québec. The event is a key driver for Canadian contemporary art, as well as a unique meeting ground for the greater public, enthusiasts, and visual arts professionals alike.[3]

  • Art Market Forum

The Art Market Forum is an event aiming to promote communal skill sharing and networking, while offering participants an opportunity to come together to discuss the challenges currently affecting our sector. The 2020 forum explored the themes of management and the digital shift. Through lectures, workshops and discussions, AGAC wishes to provide participants with the means to deal with new art market trends.

Accessible across Canada, the forum is intended for gallerists, staff working in private galleries, as well as cultural workers in any fields who are interested in the art market.

  • Collecting - the App.

Developed in collaboration with Montreal-based studio Dpt., the app is an ambitious and unique digital initiative – the first application of its kind in Canada to present a large catalogue of artworks accessible in augmented reality.

Currently, Collecting—the App features close to 1,000 works of contemporary art available for sale and presented by more than 40 Canadian galleries. Designed for art lovers from all walks of life, the application offers innovative technology to inspire and provide tools for those who aspire to live with contemporary art on a daily basis.

  • A Guide to Collecting

In 2016, the AGAC publishes A Guide to Collecting, a guide for aspiring collectors. The guide answers several questions about collecting in order to demystify this practice, which is attracting growing interest. Building on its success, a second, improved edition was launched in 2018.[4]

  • A Guide to Collecting - Corporate Edition

In 2017, the Association is launching a new guide, this time for entrepreneurs and organizations interested in starting a collection called A Guide to Collecting - Corporate Edition. This publication aims to equip managers on this practice, in addition to highlighting its many benefits and advantages. The guide offers information and advice on acquiring artworks for business, as well as testimonials from AGAC member galleries and collecting businesses.[5]

Other AGAC projects :

  • Feature: Contemporary Art Fair

Created in 2014, the Feature: Contemporary Art Fair has had two dazzling editions in Toronto. This fair was exclusively dedicated to contemporary art, bringing together artists whose practices stand out for their ability to innovate, inspire and challenge conventions.[6]

  • The Visual Arts Gala

From 2011 to 2014, the Visual Arts Gala has honoured the exceptional work of Quebec's arts scene. This festive evening also aimed to create and solidify ties within the visual arts community. It was an opportunity to highlight the talent and efforts invested by everyone in a common cause: the promotion of the visual arts in Quebec.[7]

Awards[]

AGAC also presents the following awards in association with the Ville de Montréal: Prix Louis-Comtois and Prix Pierre-Ayot.

  • Prix Louis-Comtois

The Prix Louis-Comtois was created in 1991 by the Contemporary Art Galleries Association to recognize excellence in visual arts and craft.
