Dr. Asuman Baytop (27 March 1920 - 18 February 2015) was a Turkish botanist, plant collector, pharmacologist, and educator known for her research into the medicinal properties of the flora of Turkey.[1][2] In 1964 she founded the Department of Pharmaceutical Botany at Istanbul University, and established the department's herbarium, to which she contributed over 23,000 specimens.[3][4] She is also noted for describing several species of crocus, and the species Allium baytopiorum and Colchicum baytopiorum are named in her honor.[4] She was married to fellow botanist Turhan Baytop. The standard author abbreviation A. Baytop is used to indicate this person as the author when citing a botanical name.[5]

Her publications on various aspects of the Turkish flora are numerous, and the large and important herbarium of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Istanbul University (ISTE) – which she set up – includes a significant number of specimens she collected in Turkey during her wide-ranging travels. Her life’s work, the herbarium contains 58,000 specimens, of which she personally collected 23,300.
