Sebring Amtrak station along the Auburndale Subdivision

The Auburndale Subdivision is a rail line in southern Central Florida owned and operated by CSX Transportation. It runs along CSX’s SX Line from Auburndale south to Sebring before turning southeast to Okeechobee and then toward West Palm Beach. The Auburndale Subdivision ends near North Palm Beach County General Aviation Airport, where it continues southeast to West Palm Beach as the Miami Subdivision. The line connects with CSX’s A Line (Carters Subdivision) in Auburndale.[1]

Operation[]

The Auburndale Subdivision is CSX’s only line to South Florida and the Miami area. The line notably carries Amtrak’s Silver Meteor and Silver Star trains to and from Miami, which each run round-trip daily.

Freight trains to and from Miami also run the line. Freight trains also notably serve the Palm Center Automotive Terminal just west of Jupiter and CSX’s Winter Haven Intermodal Logistics Center in Winter Haven which opened in 2014.[2][3]

CSX also uses the line to interchange freight with the Florida Midland Railroad in Winter Haven and West Lake Wales and with the South Central Florida Express (which is owned by U.S. Sugar) in Sebring.[1]

History[]

The Auburndale Subdivision was completed in 1925 by a subsidiary of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad known as the Florida Western and Northern Railroad, which originated in Coleman. The Seaboard Air Line Railroad eventually became CSX Transportation by 1986. The line was part of the Miami Subdivision in the Seaboard Air Line and Seaboard Coast Line days.[4][5] The line was abandoned between Coleman and Auburndale in 1989.[6]
