Auto-Owners Insurance Group is a mutual insurance company that provides life, home, car and business insurance. Their policies are sold exclusively through local, independent insurance agents within their 26 operating states.[3]

History[]

In 1916, Vern V. Moulton and four other associates organized Auto-Owners Insurance Company in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. In 1917, the company moved its headquarters to Lansing, Michigan where the home office has remained.[4]

Auto-Owners began writing insurance in Indiana, its first state outside of Michigan, in 1935. They continued adding states and now offer insurance in 26 states through local, independent insurance agents.[4]

The company has been a member of the Fortune 500 since 2003.[5] In 2020, Auto-Owners Insurance was listed at number 320.[5]

The AM Best Company, a nationally recognized independent insurance rating authority, has rated Auto-Owners A++ (Superior)[6] since 1972.[7]

Financial Industry Reviews[]

Forbes listed Auto-Owners Insurance as one of the best car insurance companies, rating its Customer Happiness as “Excellent”.[8] Business Insider describes Auto-Owners Insurance as one of the best homeowners insurance companies for 2020. They also note that their coverage is only available through an agent and they do not have online quotes available.[9]
