Azher Jerjis

Azher Jerjis is an Iraqi writer, and a member of the PEN international society for writers. He was born in Baghdad in 1973, and currently is living in Norway. He published a lot of stories and essays in newspapers, and his novel, "al-Nawm fī ḥaql al-karz" was nominated for the long list in the International Prize for Arabic Fiction for the year 2020.[1][2][3]

Writer's career[]

Azher Jerjis worked as a journalist in Iraq in 2003,[4] and wrote a lot of essays and stories that were published in a number of Arabic and local newspapers. Most of his writings lean towards comedy and black comedy.[5] He currently works as a cultural editor at the Norwegian newspaper "Telemark", and an interpreter between Arabic and Norwegian.[6]

He started his writing career in 2005, where he wrote his first book "Terror ... earthly hell", which is a sarcastic book about the terrorist militia in Iraq. He has been subjected to an assassination attempt because of this book which led him to flee from Iraq to Syria, then to Casablanca in Morocco, before settling in the kingdom of Norway.[7] Azher Jerjis issued his first novel "al-Nawm fī ḥaql al-karz" which was published by Dar Al-Rafidain Printing, Publishing & Distribution in 2019. "al-Nawm fī ḥaql al-karz" got nominated for the long list in the International Prize for Arabic Fiction for the year 2020.[8][9][10]
