Prof. B. Madhusoodana Kurup, is an Indian Professor and a fishery scientist, who was the founding Vice Chancellor of Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS), 2011- 2016. KUFOS is the first stand-alone university of its kind in India with its headquarters at the former campus of the College of Fisheries of the Kerala Agricultural University, Panangad, Kochi. Formerly he was the Director of the School of Industrial Fisheries of Cochin University of Science & Technology (CUSAT).[1]

He was served as an advisor to minister (Fisheries), in the rank of government secretary, Government of Kerala during 2006-2011.  He played a key role in Establishing the First Fisheries and Ocean Sciences University in Kerala, under the Ministry of Fisheries, Government of Kerala, the first of its kind in India.

Prof. Kurup was a lead academician served as a member of the academic council, board of studies, examiner of various universities. He also served as subject expert in the Agricultural Service Recruitment Board (ICAR-ASRB) in the selection of Deputy Director General (DDG), Assistant Director General (DDG), Institute Directors, Principal Scientists for the ICAR institutions.

Currently he serves as Chairman, Scientific Advisory Committee, Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture (RGCA), MPEDA-Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, Chairman, Research Advisory Committee, ICAR-Central Institute of Brackish water Aquaculture, Chennai and Adjunct Faculty, Cochin University of Science and Technology -School of Industrial Fisheries. Prof. Kurup also served as technical adviser to the Minister for Fisheries, Government of Kerala during 2006 - 2011 in the rank of Government Secretary.

Prof. Kurup completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from Kerala University (1975), and MSc in Marine Biology from Cochin University of Science & Technology. He received his PhD (Wetland Fisheries) from Cochin University of Science & Technology. Later, he did his Post Doctoral research in aquaculture - Fish Culture and Fisheries Group-Wageningen University, The Netherlands (2000-2003). He joined as Assistant Professor and Jr. Assistant Professor (Fishery Biology) in Kerala Agricultural University in 1983, and Associate Professor (Fishery Biology) during 1991-92. In 1992, he joined Cochin University of Science and Technology as Reader (Fisheries), Professor in CUSAT for more than 12 years. He served as Director of School of Industrial Fisheries from October 2008 to February 2011. Later he become the founder vice-chancellor of Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies.He also served as vice-chancellor of Shri Venkateshwara University, Gajraula, Uttar Pradesh and visiting Professor of more than ten overseas Universities.

Prof. Kurup has more than four decades of productive research experience in the field of aquatic biodiversity assessment and conservation, fisheries and aquaculture. He has mainly contributed to the assessment of biodiversity of freshwater fishes of Kerala with the help of funding support from the National Agriculture Technology Project, Ministry of Earth Sciences and World Bank. He discovered eight freshwater species new to science from western Ghats and several new records from Western Ghats, Vembanad Lake and the Exclusive Economic Zone of India. About 22 doctoral and 15 M.Phil degrees were awarded under his supervision from the Cochin University of Science and Technology.

Tor remadevii, the orange-finned mahseer, a critically endangered species of freshwater fish endemic to the Western Ghats of India was identified and named by Prof. B. Madhusoodhana Kurup and his student Radhakrishnan K V from the Pambar River,[2] in 2007.[3] Thus, allowed the species to gain finally a scientific name and contributed significantly to the conservation efforts of the species, which was under taxonomic ambiguity for many years.

Eponym[]

Puntius madhusoodani, a fish species distributed in Manimala River in Kerala,[4] India, was named after Prof. B. Madhusoodana Kurup, honoring his contribution to the taxonomy and conservation of freshwater fishes of Kerala.[5]
