A Bachelor of General Studies degree (abbreviated BGS or BGen) is an undergraduate academic degree offered by many colleges and universities in the Western world.[citation needed] The concept of general studies derives from the medieval European university concept of studium generale.[citation needed]
A BGS program allows students to design a unique degree plan while meeting their academic institution's general requirements. A BGS holds the same value as other degrees in liberal arts or sciences,[1] such as the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees, and is often regarded as an interdisciplinary degree.[by whom?]
In the United States, hundreds of colleges and universities offer BGS programs. Students can typically choose from concentrations in a variety of areas.
Despite its name, Columbia University School of General Studies does not offer a Bachelor of General Studies degree.[2]
