"Back in Blood" is a song by American rapper Pooh Shiesty, featuring vocals from fellow American rapper Lil Durk. It was released through Atlantic Records and 1017 Records as the lead single from the former's debut mixtape, Shiesty Season (2021), and two days before his twenty-first birthday on November 6, 2020. The two artists wrote it alongside its producer, YC. The song marks the first collaboration between the two artists, but they later reunited in 2021 on Lil Durk's song "Should've Ducked", a track off of the deluxe edition of his sixth studio album, The Voice.[1]

Background[]

Speaking of "Back in Blood", Pooh Shiesty spoke on his collaboration process with Lil Durk:

Durk hit me up like, "I fuck with you." I said, "Appreciate it, bro." He said, "We gon' get some shit in for sure." I said, "Where you at? Send your number, I'll push up on you now." He said, "I'm finna come to Atlanta." Week later, he came to Atlanta. Called me and said, "Push up." I pulled up to the studio and we locked in.[2]

Additionally, the song was released on the day that American rapper King Von passed away due to a shooting, but only three hours before.[3] Von and Lil Durk were very close; they were labelmates who were signed to the latter's record label, Only the Family, and they grew up together in Chicago, Illinois.[4] Timothy Leeks was arrested in suspicion to his murder the day after it happened, on November 7, 2020.[5]

Commercial performance[]

"Back in Blood" debuted at number 93 on the Billboard Hot 100. It later peaked at number 13. The song marks Pooh Shiesty's first song to enter the chart and his highest-charting song, while also serving as Lil Durk's second highest-charting song, following his feature on Canadian rapper Drake's single "Laugh Now Cry Later", which debuted and peaked at number 2, it was released on August 14, 2020. On February 22, 2021, the song was certified gold.[6]

Music video[]

The official music video for the song was directed by Jerry Productions and was released on January 2, 2021.[7] Pooh Shiesty and Lil Durk are dancing in the trenches of the latter's hometown of Chicago, Illinois.[8] They also pay tribute to the late King Von, who makes a short cameo appearance in it, and Fredo Bang also makes a cameo in the video. [9]

Live performances[]

On February 11, 2021, Pooh Shiesty performed a piano version of "Back in Blood" (without Lil Durk) alongside "Guard Up", two songs from his mixtape, live on Audiomack.[10] He performed the two songs again live on Vevo CTRL on February 26, 2021.[11] Shiesty performed the song on April 14, 2021, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, with Durk assisting him.[12]
