Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR) (Bengali: বাংলাদেশ বিজ্ঞান ও শিল্প গবেষণা পরিষদ) is a scientific and industrial research organization, a regulatory body and national laboratory of Bangladesh. Its main objective is to pursue scientific research for the betterment of the Bangladeshi people. It was established on 16 November 1973.[1] It's central beautiful premise is located in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, one the most aristocratic regions of the capital city of Bangladesh. Moreover, its regional laboratories are located in Savar (Dhaka), Chattogram, Rajshahi, and Joypurhat of Bangladesh.

BCSIR is the most oldest and enrich research organization of Bangladesh, having 12 research Institutes, 320 active scientists supported by about 710 technical and official personnel. From the very beginning, it has been playing an important role in R&D activities covering approximately 60 major branches of basic and applied sciences such as synthetic chemistry, pulp, and paper, fiber and polymer, tissue culture, genomics, medicine, herbal products, biomedical engineering, toxicology, food supplements, industrial physics, physical instrumentation, light engineering, mine and minerals, glass and ceramics, thin-film, magnetic materials, leather products, environmental science, renewable energy, etc. Its laboratories are well-equipped with advanced high-tech machinery.

Apart from the R&D activities, an intensified and sustained training schedule has been implemented for developing the skills of scientists. Monthly seminars on R&D have also been introduced with a view to greater diffusion of knowledge among the scientists. As an R&D institute, the interaction with relevant industries has also been enhanced. Every year, BCSIR provides more than five thousand technical and analytical services to national and multinational industries and organizations. Through these services, BCSIR reduces the production cost of the products made in Bangladesh that indirectly reduces the price of these products at the consumer level.

Besides, a total of 50 Graduate, Doctoral and Post-doctoral fellowships are extended among the interested national and international researchers. Recently, about 100 additional posts have been created for the above-mentioned three categories with a lucrative monthly allowance. Besides, BCSIR has been contributing to the development of the Human Resource for Research and Development. In this regard, it provides four categories of Thesis Supervision for the students of MS, M.Phil, Ph.D., and Post. Doc. students. BCSIR also provides a wide range of professional training.

BCSIR already published about 5800 peer-reviewed journals, proceedings, book chapters, books, etc and developed 1020 industrial products, and gained 371 Patent rights. It is the research agency that solely invents and granted about 53% patent rights among Bangladeshi Institutions from the Bangladeshi patent office (WIPO Bangladesh Chapter). Besides the patent success, in recent years, BCSIR scientists showing their potential in scientific publications. In 2020, they published about 210 peer-reviewed publications. According to the prestigious Scimago institutions ranking 2021, it is placed in the 806th rankings position in the world.

BCSIR is on a journey towards providing the best service experiences for industrialization in Bangladesh. To run the process smoothly, to maximize the quality of the industrial product with minimum cost and available raw materials, and to uplift the brand value of the product to the next level; BCSIR  scientists are expanding their times, intellects, and experiences with utmost dedication.

History[]

BCSIR is the apex and largest multi-disciplinary public research organization in Bangladesh. BCSIR traces its roots back to the days of East Pakistan. East Regional Laboratories of Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) was established in Dhaka in 1955. Renowned scientist Dr. Muhammad Qudrat-i-Khuda was the founding director of that Laboratory. Subsequently, PSCIR laboratories were established in Rajshahi (1965) and in Chittagong (1967). After the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, BCSIR was established under direct inspiration, advice, and guidance of the father of the nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1973, which subsequently reconstituted as the Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research through a Presidential Ordinance namely Ordinance No. (V) of 1978.[2]

Being the leading Research and Development (R&D) organization of Bangladesh, BCSIR is conducting R&D works according to the national demand and contributing to accelerate the economic vibrancy for more than 50 years. During this period BCSIR has expanded its domain to three full-fledged multi-disciplinary regional laboratories, eight mono disciplinary institutes, and one center for pilot plant studies, which are as follows Institute section.
