Baral is a surname found in people from Nepal, Bangladesh, India, as well as a small number of Jews from Poland and Austria. There are over 100,000 Nepalese Barals who mainly constitute Khas people of over 70% Brahmin, 15% Chhetri, 10% Rajputs and the remaining 5% Brahmin-Chhetri castes and few also belongs to Dalit community in Nepal

The surname Baral is found predominantly in India in individuals from the Khandayat, landed militia community in Odisha. The people with surname Baral/Boral in present West Bengal and Bangladesh are ethnic Bengali people.

People of this surnames who are belongs to Bengal, Assam, Tripura and Bangladesh are Yajurvedi Brahmins. Basically, they lives their life by practicing religion and worship. Later on, in pursuit of a livelihood, they concentrated on various trades and farming, but gained a best reputation for their skill in making and trading of gold, silver and other precious jewelries, that's why they are often called gold merchants (Suvarna Banik or Swarna Banik / Sonar Bene). There are many misconceptions about Barals but it's clear that Barals are Brahmins and later they became traders.

Suvarna Banik or Swarna Baniks popularly called Bene is a mercantile group from Bengal dealing in gold and silver. Their spiritual guide is Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and their religious services are performed by a class of Brahmins called Sonar Baniya(Bene) Brahmins.
