Production[]

On March 22, 2020, it was reported that Alejandro González Iñárritu would write, direct, and produce a new film, with filming to be in Mexico and Bradford Young serving as cinematographer.[2] On March 9, 2021, Griselda Siciliani joined the cast.[3] In July 2021, Grantham Coleman joined the cast of the film.[4]

On September 24, 2021, rumours were reported "indicating that Iñárritu completely ignored COVID protocols during the production of ‘Bardo’ [...] which resulted in terrible working conditions and even COVID-related deaths of some crew members."[5]

Principal photography began on March 3, 2021, in Mexico City, Mexico, with Darius Khondji instead serving as cinematographer, alongside Eugenio Caballero working as production designer.[6] Five months of filming were planned in other locations in the Capital and the Estudios Churubusco.[7][8][9] On March 4, 2021, during the filming of one of the scenes in the Historic center of Mexico City, a passerby was arrested for hitting a security member of the production team.[10] In September 2021, it was reported that the film, which would be titled Bardo (or False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths), had completed production.[1]
