Tournaments

The Baseball5 World Cup (B5WC, and sometimes referred to as the Senior Baseball5 World Cup)[1] is a mixed-gender Baseball5 (B5) world championship that is to be held every two years, with the first edition to be held in 2022 and contested by 12 countries.[2] The Youth Baseball5 World Cup (YB5WC) is a B5 world championship for players aged 14 to 18 years old, and follows the same format as the B5WC, with the first edition to be held in 2023, and the 2025 edition to act as a qualifier for the mixed-gender Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics Baseball5 event, which will be Baseball5's first appearance at the Youth Olympics, as well as the first appearance of a mixed-gender team sport at an Olympic event.[2][3] Both tournaments are governed by the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC).[4]

History[]

The B5WC's were originally planned to both happen in December 2020 in Mexico.[5] The COVID-19 pandemic led to the delay of both B5WC's to June 2021, with the 2021 YB5WC being expected to act as a qualifier for the 2022 Youth Olympic Games (2022 YOG);[6] however, the YOG were also impacted by the pandemic, and thus delayed to 2026, with the continued impact of the pandemic also delaying the B5WC's further. It was later decided that the WC's would be played on an alternating basis every two years, with the 2025 YB5WC thus becoming the first qualifying event to the inaugural Baseball5 appearance at the YOG in 2026.[2] The YB5WC age group format matches the YOG, which requires players to be 14 to 18 years old.[7]

The 14-team 2020 European Baseball5 Championship held in February and March saw France and Lithuania take the two available Europe berths to qualify for the inaugural B5WC.[8][9] The Oceania qualifier was scheduled to be played in Australia in 2021.[10] The Asia qualifiers were scheduled to be played in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in April 2021,[11] but were then postponed due to COVID-19.[12]

Format[]

The 12 countries participating in each World Cup are geographically broken down as follows:[6]

Both types of World Cup follow the same format: there are 12 countries that play a total of 50 games over 7 days. Each tournament will be played in three venues, with the 12 teams separated into two groups each playing a single round-robin, followed by a "super round" and then the finals.[1]

Each team has five active players and eight players total on the roster, with the mixed-gender nature of the tournament requiring teams to have half of their roster to be of each gender, and at least two active players per gender in the game.[5][13]
