Bellaghy Wolfe Tones Gaelic Athletic Club (Irish: CLG Baile Eachaidh) is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Bellaghy, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The club is a member of Derry GAA and currently competes in gaelic football and camogie.

Bellaghy have won 21 Derry Senior Football Championships, four Ulster Senior Club Football Championships and the 1971-72 All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship. Bellaghy camogie club have won two Derry Senior Camogie Championships.

In October 2021, "dissident republican" political party Saoradh, organised an event on the grounds to commemorate the 1981 Irish hunger strike. A month prior the club released a statement saying that "no event other than those relating to official GAA activity or training will be taking place at club premises on that date" however the event went ahead as planned in the club's car park before parading through the town.[1]

2021 Football Season[]

Public health measures due to the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the start of the Derry GAA season. Training of club teams was permitted from 12 April 2021 and competitive club matches began in Derry on 7 May 2021.

2021 League and Championship Format[]

The Derry Competitions Control Committee varied the league and championship competition rules as the season was delayed due to COVID-19 public health restrictions.

Derry club leagues were played but the final league position of a team in 2021 was not used to determine relegation or promotion within the football leagues. In 2022, the division which a team played in was determined by their performance in the 2021 football championships. Clubs played their league games without their county players until Derry were eliminated from the Ulster championship.

The 2021 senior championship began with the sixteen senior teams (all twelve teams from Division 1A plus four from Division 1B) playing in four groups of four - in 2019 the championship format was straight knockout. Each group was based on the results of the 2020 senior football championship and contained one 2020 semi-finalist, one 2020 beaten quarter finalist and two beaten teams from the 2020 first knockout round of sixteen teams. All sixteen teams progressed to the first knockout round with the group winners playing the fourth-placed teams and the second-placed teams playing the third-placed teams. The quarter-finals were determined by an open draw designed to avoid any repeat of the earlier group matches (if possible) and the semi-finals by an open draw.

The eight beaten teams in the first knockout round involving all sixteen teams progressed to the relegation playoff quarter-finals. The four beaten teams progressed to the relegation semi-finals with the losers playing off in the relegation final.

In 2022, Division 1A consisted of the eight winners of the first knockout round of eight games plus the four winners of the relegation quarter-finals. The remaining four teams were assigned to Division 1B (some of these teams might already be in Division 1B).

All the teams except the losers of the relegation final qualified to compete in the senior championship in 2022. The 16th place was allocated to the winner of the 2021 intermediate championship.

The remaining Derry championships were organised as an initial group phase followed by a knockout phase or as a straight knockout competition.

2021 Promotions and Relegations[]

All promotions in 2021 were decided by performances in the senior championship and the relegation playoffs.

Senior Championship

  • Foreglen conceded before the relegation semi final playoffs and were automatically relegated to the 2022 intermediate championship, thus making the relegation semi finals and final unnecessary.
  • Steelstown beat Greenlough by 0-09 to 0-08 in the intermediate championship final. Steelstown replaced Foreglen in the 2022 senior championship.

Divisions 1A & 1B

  • Banagher beat Dungiven by 1-09 to 0-09 in a relegation quarter final playoff. Banagher were promoted to Division 1A. Dungiven remained in Division 1B.
  • Claudy beat Newbridge by 0-13 to 0-12 in a relegation quarter final playoff. Claudy remained in Division 1A. Newbridge were relegated to Division 1B.

2020 Football Season[]

Public health measures (including a lockdown and social distancing) were introduced in March 2020 in order to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result the Derry GAA competitions were delayed and/or cancelled.

2020 Championship Football[]

Derry GAA pitches were closed between March 2020 and June 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In response, the Derry Competitions Control Committee restructured the championships. The senior championship began with the sixteen senior teams playing in four groups of four (in 2019 the championship format was straight knockout).

The remaining Derry championships were restructured to an initial group phase followed by a knockout phase or further group phase.

At the start of the 2019 season, the adult football leagues in Derry were restructured to Division 1A - 12 teams, Division 1B - 12 teams and Division 2 - 13 teams (Ógra Colmcille opted out in 2019). Previously there were 16 teams in Division 1, 14 teams in Division 2 and 8 teams in Division 3. In 2019 two teams were relegated from Division 1A and two teams were promoted from Division 1B. All twelve teams in Division 1A in 2019 and four teams from Division 1B in 2019 qualified to compete in the 2020 senior championship.

2019 Sean Larkin Cup[]

A summer break was introduced in the Derry adult football leagues in 2018 to facilitate the Derry county teams competing in the Ulster senior football championship, the Ulster under-20 football championship and the Christy Ring Hurling Cup. During the break clubs competed without their county players in one of the regional cups – teams from North Derry competed in the Dr. Kerlin Cup and teams from South Derry competed in the Sean Larkin Cup.

After the 2018 season, the adult football leagues in Derry were restructured to Division 1A - 12 teams, Division 1B - 12 teams and Division 2 - 13 teams (Ógra Colmcille opted out in 2019). Previously there were 16 teams in Division 1, 14 teams in Division 2 and 8 teams in Division 3.[4] Five teams were relegated from 2018 Division 1 to the new Division 1B (see below for details). The 2019 senior championship was competed for by the top 15 teams in the 2018 Division 1 and Banagher, the winners of the 2018 Division 2 and winners of a relegation/promotion playoff against Newbridge. Claudy, who finished 16th in 2018, were relegated to the 2019 intermediate football championship.

Division 1 Summary

  • Slaughtneil finished 1st with 28 points
  • Bellaghy finished 9th with 13 points
  • Newbridge finished 12th with 12 points and played Banagher, the Division 2 winners, in a relegation/promotion match on 12 October 2018. Banagher won by 2-08 to 1-07 and were promoted to the new Division 1A. Newbridge were relegated to the new Division 1B

Ballerin were relegated to the new Division 2.

2018 Sean Larkin Cup[]

The Division 1 League Cups were initiated in 2018 to provide football for club players during the summer break in the Division 1 League and to facilitate the Derry county teams. Clubs competed in one of the two League Cups (also known as the Dr. Kerlin Cup and the Sean Larkin Cup, the former North and South Derry District Cups) without their county players who were part of the county panels competing in the Ulster senior football championship, the Ulster under-20 football championship and the Christy Ring Cup.

Pitches[]

Bellaghy's main pitch, Páirc Seán de Brún, is named after their former club chairman Seán Brown who was attacked and abducted by a Loyalist Volunteer Force (LVF) gang on the evening of 12 May 1997 as he locked the main gate of the GAA grounds on the Ballyscullion Road. Less than an hour later the body of the father-of-six was found lying beside his burnt-out car just off the Moneynick Road near Randalstown, County Antrim. He had been shot six times.[5][6] On 19 January 2004 the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland published a report that was highly critical of the police investigation into Brown's killing.[7]

The club also have two full-sized pitches and dressing rooms at Drumanee, just outside the village.

Notable Gaelic footballers[]

  • Tommy Gribben - First Derry man to win an All Ireland medal with St Pat's Armagh in 1946. Derry County Footballer 1945-1955, 1957–1958, Tyrone County Footballer 1956, Ulster Provincial Footballer, Derry Junior Manager and Coach of 1971-72 Bellaghy All-Ireland winning team.
  • Tom Scullion
  • Tommy Diamond - Former Derry player. First player to captain a county to victory in both All-Ireland Minor (1965) and All-Ireland Under-21 (1968) Championships.[8]
  • Laurence Diamond - Former Derry midfielder. Captain of 1971-72 Bellaghy All-Ireland winning team.
  • Damian Cassidy - Represented Derry seniors from 1984 until 1996. Left half forward of Derry's 1993 All-Ireland winning team. Managed Bellaghy to senior finals in 2004, 05 & 07, winning in 2005.
  • Danny Quinn - Member of Derry's 1993 All-Ireland winning panel.
  • Fergal Doherty - Former Derry mid-fielder.
