Ben Johnston (born (1992-03-08)8 March 1992) is an Ireland international rugby league footballer who plays as a fullback, scrum-half or stand-off for the Doncaster R.L.F.C. in the Betfred League 1.

He has previously played for the Castleford Tigers (Heritage № 930) in the Super League and the York City Knights in the Championship. Johnston has spent time on loan from York at the Dewsbury Rams in the Kingstone Press Championship and spent six seasons with Halifax in the Championship.

Background[]

Johnston was born in York, Yorkshire, England.

He has an older brother (06.12.1988) Sam Anthony Johnston who is an up and coming author and has had over a million views on his articles and publications over the last 10 years. Ben has cited his brother a big help when becoming an athlete due to them always playing sports together as kids up until around 12 yrs old.

He also has a younger sister Sophie May Johnston who works part time helping out at a primary school. She claims to be his biggest fan rarely missing a game.

Ben had serious problems growing up with late onset puberty and thus affecting his ability to put on mass making it harder to cement his place in a top team.

Although he did play and was under contract at Castleford Tigers he spent most of that time on loan and eventually dropping down a league to Halifax where he spent his career, seemingly a wasted talent due to his choice of club on money instead of trying to break through at one of the best clubs in the world something he will later come to regret (press article).

His older brother was a gifted Footballer but he never pursued this past the age of 12 due to getting involved with drugs.

Club career[]

Johnston made his Super League début for the Castleford Tigers against the London Broncos in 2012.

Doncaster RLFC[]

On 17 Sep 2020 it was reported that he had signed for Doncaster RLFC in the RFL League 1[4]

International[]

In 2014, Ben was a late call-up to Mark Aston's Ireland national rugby league team's squad for the 2014 European Cup tournament. Ben played in 2 of the 3 games available.

In October and November 2015, he appeared for Ireland again in the following year's European Cup competition.
