Bi Bi Monajemeh Nishaburi

Bi Bi Monajemeh Nishaburi (بی بی منجمه نیشابوری) was an Iranian mathematician and astronomer (1203 in Nishabur, Iran – 1280), is chiefly known for her works for as an astronomer when she worked for the kings.

Biography[]

Her father, Kamal ad-Din Semnani, was the chief of Shafi'i group in Nishabur and an astronomer working in the kingdom of Muhammad II of Khawrezm. Her mother was the granddaughter of Mohammad ebn-Yahya, the famous lawyer in Khorasan. Monajemeh learned about astronomy from his father, moreover, their house was used to be a main place for scholars, elites and philosophers meetings. All of that had provided Monajemeh with an opportunity to learn about the mathematics and astronomy when she was so young. Later, she became one of the scientists of her time age. Monajemeh’s knowledge and mastery in astronomy made her famous in her time and provide her with the opportunity to work as an astronomer and consultant for the kings of her time age. She married Majd ad-Din Mohammad who was an elite in the king's ( Jalal ad-Din Mingburnu) bureau and they lived for years in the king's court before they immigrate to Damascus. They had a son, Amir Naser ad-Din Hossein (abbr. Naser ad-Din). Naser ad-Din was chief of commanders in the late of Seljuq dynasty. He was a historian too. He wrote about the history of Seljuq in his book “الاوامور العلانیه فی الامور العلانیه” which mostly includes the Seljug’s story from year 1209 to 1300.

Career[]

Monajemeh worked as an astronomer and consultant for the kings Jala ad-Din Mingburnu and Kayqubad I. That time, kings had strong belief in astronomy and they had applied astronomy and mathematics to the strategy of tactics of their battles. Monajemeh had good knowledge in mathematics and astronomy and she was famous in her time for her knowledge. Because of her knowledge in calculation and geometry of the interstellar, the kings had Monajemeh with them in their battles to help them with the calculation of the tactics and picturing the plans.

She was present in many of the battles over Mongol Empire helping the king Jalal ad-Din Mingburnu in planning strategies. She worked for Jala ad-Din Mingburnu until about the year 1247. At that time Jala ad-Din Mingburnu was defeated from Mongols and he was killed after a while. Then Monajemeh immigrated to Damascus. There the king of Seljugy, Kayqubad I, who had heard about Monajemeh’s knowledge and skills in calculation and astronomy sent his legate to invite Monajemeh to his court. Kayqubad welcomed Monajemeh and asked her to work for him. Monajemeh had successes in the battle of Seljuq dynasty over Levante and these successes promoted her position and the king Kayqubad wore her monarch robe as an honor.
