Blue Archive (Korean: 블루 아카이브 /Japanese: ブルーアーカイブ) is a role-playing game developed by Nexon Games (formerly NAT Games), a subsidiary of South Korean game company Nexon.[3] The game is free-to-play with gacha mechanics. It was first released for Android and iOS by Shanghai Yostar (CN/JP) in February 2021 and worldwide in November that year by Nexon. The combat system of Blue Archive features a 3D real-time environment with chibi characters.

Blue Archive takes place in the academy city of Kivotos. The player takes the role of a teacher, called Sensei, who is summoned by the president of the General Student Council, a committee managing the schools, before her disappearance. Criminal activity rises following her disappearance. Sensei has the task to resolve the issues around Kivotos and help find the missing president.[4]

Gameplay[]

Blue Archive is a role-playing game that allows the player to form and mobilize units of up to six members (two “Specials” and four “Strikers”) to participate in various campaigns with. Students’ strengths can be enhanced in various ways, such as by increasing their levels, weapons, armor and skills. More students can be recruited through the gacha system using in-game currency, which may be purchased through in-app purchases.[5]

The units are mobilized on a turn-based hex map and battle initiates when they interact with an enemy or vice versa. In combat, Strikers march along a straight path and occasionally encounter groups of enemies. Strikers fire automatic attacks and can hide behind objects to decrease their chances of getting hit. Specials do not engage in direct combat but increase the Strikers’ stats and support them from the backlines instead. The player has generally no control over battles with the exception of using the students’ skills, that cost a regenerable currency to use.[5] Students and enemies both have rock-paper-scissors-based attacks and defenses, which determine their strengths and weaknesses. Students get rescued by a helicopter and can't participate in later battles if they lose all of their health.

Story[]

Setting[]

Blue Archive takes place in the academy city of Kivotos. Established by the union of thousands of academies, the city is divided into mostly independent districts. The president of a federal committee, called the General Student Council, has access to everyone’s register and governs the city from the Sanctum Tower. However, before the events of the game, she mysteriously disappears, thus giving a criminal uprising and a rise in military presence in Kivotos. The General Student Council cannot access the Sanctum Tower without the authorization of the president.

Lore[]

The player assumes the role of a teacher, called Sensei, whose gender is not mentioned but is implied to be male.[4] Sensei was summoned to be the advisor of Schale, an extrajudicial organization, by the president of the General Student Council before disappearing. Sensei gets woken up in the General Student Council by a member but gets interrupted by four students who came to report issues happening at their respective schools. The six decide to leave for the Schale building as Sensei may be authorized transfer the Sanctum Tower's permission there. Once they arrive, Sensei receives a tablet made by the president and gives the password they were told by the president. Sensei enters the system and meets an AI who authenticates them and restores permission to the General Student Council and Schale.

Development[]

Yostar announced the mobile game in July 2020.[6] Initially scheduled to be released in 2020, it was later moved to February 4, 2021.[7][8] An English version of the game was announced in August 2021,[9] surpassing one million pre-registrations ahead of its release.[4] Blue Archive was released worldwide on November 8 of the same year[10] by Nexon.[11]
