Bongo Cat is a cartoon animation cat that has been featured as an Internet meme to play the bongo drum that has been used in various remix videos to make it appear as though the cat is playing along to different songs. After the original video grew popular, people made different versions of the video showing the cat playing other instruments.

Bongo Cat is yet another internet meme about a cartoon cat. It originated on May 7, 2018, when an animated cat gif made by Twitter user "@StrayRogue"[1] was edited by Twitter user "@DitzyFlama," in which he'd edited the GIF to include bongos and added the music "Athletic" from the Super Mario World soundtrack.[2] It was later has been edited to many other songs and many different instruments in fan-made videos, appearing in social medias such as YouTube and Twitter.[3][4] When the meme was spread, the meme has covered some theme song at video games like Persona 5 and Super Mario as well as Toto’s “Africa” and Darude’s “Sandstorm.”[3] After the popularity, Stray Rogue has started making and selling Bongo Cat merchandise.[5] Bongo Cat also has been made in interactive website "bongo.cat".[6] A Twitter user named "Apler" tweeted a video of him dressing as a Bongo Cat while playing the drum.[7]

Polygon and Uproxx both described the Bongo Cat as the best meme of 2018.[8][9] Ellen Scott of Metro also described as "It brings happiness to all, even in the trashfire year that was 2018."[10] While The Daily Dot described it as the most earnest and wholesome meme of 2018.[11] Reid McCarter of The A.V. Club and Megan Farokhmanesh of The Verge both praised the meme and one of the best and good meme.[4][6] It also was described as ones of the best in the internet.[12] Nicole Clark of Vice described the meme as "the only good thing on the internet."[13] New York’s Brian Feldman celebrated the birth of the Bongo Cat by tracing its path to online.[2]
