Marcus Braveboy (born May 9, 1985) better known by his stage name Braveboy (former stage name Mark Hardy) is a singer, songwriter born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago.

Early life[]

Braveboy began his music career by entering various talent competitions in Trinidad and Tobago with childhood friends. He was first introduced to music at age 15 when he met Ken Holder the music producer of the ragga soca group 3Suns.[1] His father is former Trinidadian television personality Hilton Braveboy

Career[]

Braveboy initially released his first single "Lyrical Apology" produced by Giandre "The Phoenix" Diaz under the stage name Mark Hardy. The song won Fresh Track Of The Year 2010 on Heartstopper 91.3FM in Newark, Delaware.[2]

In 2013, he partnered with Trinidadian rapper Yung Rudd and producer Mevon Soodeen of Xplicit Entertainment to create the Trapso genre, a fusion of Trap music and Soca. Together, they released the songs "Pumpin", "Nah Boy", "Wuz D Scene" and “IZAHTRINI"[3] Braveboy along with Yung Rudd were the winners of the 2015, People's Choice Award at the Copyright Music Organisation of Trinidad and Tobago (COTT) Awards.[4] Braveboy went on to collaborate with Trinidadian artist Stef Kalloo for the cross over dancehall song, “Dan It Up”.[5]

In 2016, he worked with popular EDM DJ/producer trio Bad Royale touring with them in the U.S, and performing at the Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago. He was featured on their single “Galaxy Ranger”. He became the brand ambassador for French wine Luc Belaire in the same year[6]

Braveboy has collaborated with several international artists and producers such as Franques, Shad, Sonny Denja, Callum Higby, Two Seven Clash, Casely, Ma-Less, Richie Loop and Walshy Fire of Major Lazer.

In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Braveboy hosted the "We Inside" concert series produced by the Trinidad and Tobago government's MusicTT,[7] alongside frequent collaborator Stef Kalloo

In 2021 Braveboy released the first single from his EP "Braveboy Meets World", called "AfribbeanGyal" featuring Nigerian singer DELLFIRE. Braveboy's song "Action Ting" was featuring in a promotional clip for the Cleveland Cavaliers and his song "Clout Chaser" featuring on the score for Fast & Furious Spy Racers, animated series on Netflix.[8] In 2022 his song “Slow Motion” was featured on the Netflix original series, ‘Selling Tampa.[9]

He collaborated with Nigerian artist DELLFIRE for the song “Choke”, produced by Nigerian music producer Jayprolytah.[10] Braveboy said "The song was inspired by the Nigerian street slang E-Choke, made popular by Afrobeats artist Davido. The slang is used to refer to something that is ‘amazing’, ‘spectacular’, or ‘out of this world’". The word is used in Braveboy's song to refer to the beauty of a love interest in the song's chorus. The song premiered in the US, on Seattle radio station KEXP's Overnight Afrobeats hosted by Lace Cadence, and in the UK on London's black-owned online radio station No Signal Radio hosted by Super Midz, the official DJ for Afrobeats artist Afro B. He then went on to collaborate with UK DJ/producer Vik Toreus for the song “Shake That Ting” [11]
